Howdy yall... this is my first post on the pre-dental section, so allow me to give a bit of history of myself. I'm a college undergrad exploring the possible careers in healthcare... I was a CNA in High Scool... but I rather not be a nurse. I've spoken with some doctors, and am going to do some volunteer work at a hospital or somewhere in order to get more experience in the field... I haven't really spoken with any dentists.... I'm actually a business (computer information systems) major with minors in Philosophy and Religion and Chemistry and am still exploring my interests and trying to decide what type of career would be best for me.

My question is, I saw this quote off of the UNC website
"Students are encouraged to take as many courses as possible in social science, history, literature, economics, philosophy, and psychology."

Why is this? And is it true that a business background is favorable for dentists?

they want well-rounded students not just science geeks thus they encourage a variety of courses to be taken; and business courses will come handy once you're in private practice as you'll be running a business along with providing oral health care.

Yeah- that is one thing i've noticed about dentistry is that you run your own clinic, which is stinkin awesome.

That makes sense... i just thought it a bit odd that they were seeking people savvy in history and lit... granted, these are very interesting subjects, I just wasn't making the connection.
