Why would you lie about your stats online? Everyone says people inflate their stats on predents or maybe even on here when they post a "hypothetical" thread. I'm wondering why you would lie about it? If you don't want anyone to know why even bring it up? I could say I'm a 4.0 student and did the Kaplan method and got into UCSF, UoP, UCLA, Harvard, Penn, and all those great schools but what good does it do me? At the end of the day the only person you're fooling is yourself.

A good buddy of mine told me his DAT was a 19 when it was a 17 for three months. He finally retook it and when he did better he told me. What the heck!?!?! it was weird.

Yeah, lying about your stats is lame. Anyways, I'm heading to the gym now to see if I can break my benchpress record of 400lbs. Afterwards I'll be hanging out with my CIA buddies to help them analyze the latest satellite images of Iran.

Dude, I curl 400lbs. I used to be stuck where you're at but I bought the Bowflex home gym and have used it 9 hours/day for the last 4 months. CIA buddies? Hell, I dug up J. Edgar Hoover and we have tea and biscuits in Area 51 daily. We are working on the Mars landing of 2012.

People lie about their stats because to prehealthers, intelligence is EVERYTHING! If you don't have it, you feel you will never have respect. Grades and DAT scores are a faster way to get respect than actually working at impressing someone on a personal level.

what really sucks is many people are using the information on SDN and predents as a tool for comparison and as a way to judge where they should apply. Unfortunately looking at these stats is like looking at a high school football roster, a 5ft 8in 150lb player somehow is listed 6ft 200lb. The stats you post are only connected to a meaningless user name, for the sake of everyone using these resources, please post accurate information.

Unless people are going to deflate their scores, I don't see how inflated scores could be anything be a bit of extra motivation. And then when you DO get accepted without the 4.4 gpa and 29 DAT you'll feel that much better. I think everyone ultimately compares their score to the ADA frequency tables (click here for 2007 frequency tables, the password is "ada" ) as it is the only way to see how you measure up against EVERYBODY, so it really doesn't matter what people put up here. I guess I give everyone the benefit of a doubt, anyway.

You're on to me! You caught my lies!

Lying about stats is one thing. I've seen people who lie about their interviews and acceptances. I mean, what good does that do to anyone?

People probably lie because they want to compensate for their lack of skills/grades/DAT scores. There are a lot of over-achievers on SDN so they try to make themselves feel better.

Although, I have never heard of people lying about interviews AND acceptances... I don't think that has happened on SDN or for real tamkhan. That may be an exaggeration.

i didnt lie in my predent profile.

i dont see the point if you lie? why boast to people online you dont even know? it wont help anyone if you lie..............

edit: grammar error

ya, im sure some people inflate their scores.
i need help and hence i don't have the luxury to show off to people on the internet. I do envy anyone who can do that.
😛😛😛

I doubt that people ever inflate their grades or DAT on here 🙄

I'm hoping to be one of these people

The ADA stats don't match up to the percentiles I got on my screen when I took my DAT. Why don't they? I took mine in late July 07'

i took it around the same time as you and noticed the same discrepancy

I think my hand slipped across the keyboard there, I meant I do 400lb neck lifts. I'm waiting for my gym to get a shipment of lead weights and a reinforced bar before I attempt my benchpress max. Forgive me but it's hard to concentrate on my typing with the glare of the spotlights on my framed DAT scores above my computer. That 29 in RC still chaps my a** however. I might have retake it because it distracts from my Summa Cum Laude diploma.

probably because the test had not been "harder" for that long? This is 2007 year end averages afterall.

That was just my guess.

those tables only show scores of people taking the test for the first time in 2007. who knows how much re-takers affect things.

Same here, but thats pretty sweet, it puts me in a much higher percentile. That test was ****** impossible!!

isn't the percentile on your screen the actual percentile of people you did better against with the same test? From what I understood, the number is calculated from a straight scale percentage of correct responses? I could, of course, be mistaken. The numbers on ADA are probably an average of the percentages that a score represents.

On the topic, lie about your stats to intimidate other applicants when they meet you on interview day! Of course, they're more intimidating if they're true. 😉

Yeah, I took the test in July, too, and noticed the difference between now and the 2007 frequencies. Obviously, half a year of stats will change things, but I thought what we were shown on the screen was actually from 2006 stats. Anyone compare the 2006 and 2007? I have them both, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Ah, yes...my mistake as well. I apologize profusely as I was rushed because the Guinness book people were here again, and I was getting my make-up put on for the Ripley's Believe it or Not show. Apparently graduating from Harvard with a triple degree in mechanical engineering, physical chemistry and ballet at the age of 9, while traveling with the circus through the back woods of West Virginia is a big deal. I'll probably finish dental school in 6 months while I tape my new reality tv show "Porkchop2008 Knows Best". Also, I stopped lifting weights because they had to ship in so much weight for me to get a proper workout, there were concerns that it would de-stabilize the Earth's rotation and knock us out of orbit from the Sun.

Until I came on SDN I never knew that such high scores were possible. Whether they are false or not, it sure gave me some extra motivation.

Interesting, no one in the country got a 26AA, yet two people on predents claimed they did. ...*cough, cough Shunwei and Whit**

And there's no way Harvard'll have a 24.4AA again. Not when only 6 people in then country got above a 24AA. Looks like people who scored a 21-22 or above are at a very high premium this cycle

Harvard's new average is 22.7 I believe. It looks like the DAT's QR section got a lot harder since the average (mean) went down from a 17 to a 15! 😱 But all the other means are around 17-18 which looks normal.

Also there is no way anyone will ever really KNOW if people are lying on here or not. Unless they actually ADMIT it there is no way you will ever know for sure....

Shunwei did mention that it was his second time taking it though...

There was a guy I went to undergrad with who claimed a particular med school (that doesn't even exist) came down to have dinner with his family and "recruit" him to come to their med school. He also says he turned down other acceptances to go to a school not in the states. The funny thing is, he actually is a very intelligent guy, and he has no reason to lie.

Was this lie his way of testing a person's gullibility? He exhalted himself by telling others the school gave him personal attention. Yet, he purposely implanted a minor detail to give away that he's lying. I think he's testing everyone.

Hmmm sounds like you got an ax to grind . . . . or wait, let me think, what would be the benefit for my trying to impress a bunch of people 99.9% I don't even know? Pretty soon it seems like Predents to require people to scan in their score report to post a "valid" profile.

For the record, I have met Whit one time during my Columbia interview. Obviously I have not seen her dossier myself in person, but she doesn't seem like the person who'd lie; as for me, such "distinction" is trivial at best. I just hate to see SDN turn into a joint where only cynics and arrogant bas*ards hangout.

i assume that most people on SDN are posting accurate scores/GPAs to tell you the truth. if i were to guess what percentage of people are posting false stats, i would have to go with 10% or less.

An unfortunate statement. Like Shunwei said, who cares enough what a bunch of anonymous people think about one's scores to make them up? And, of course, the cynic here safely resides behind his or her anonymity. We do not know the methods used to compile these frequency tables. It lists scores, it lists a time frame, but who knows?

Why does Shunwei's 26AA not show in the 06-07 frequency tables? The obvious answer would be that all of our scores were calculate differently for this publication given the avalibility of ALL test scores for the whole year. Remember, what you saw on the screen was an estimate of your DAT score based most likely on 2005-2006 frequencies. The scores depend on what everyone else got, but if you took it in June there are still six more months of scores left to figure in for the year. It is highly likely that the score you got is not the same as what was finally calculated at end of the year.

So, get off Shunwei and Whit's case. We should applaude success on this forum, not try to drag people down.

Geez, all the people who can't detect or take a friendly joke! I know Shunwei took the test the second time. I remember him saying that. He was trying to get a scholarship into dental school and he got a 20 the first time around. That's why he's not on there. I'm lying on my predents too. It says I have a 2AA.

I've also met Whit. She and I hung out for a bit in Boston. Short, petite brunette who likes to wear electric green sneakers, right?

And I'm always amazed at what people choose to believe. You have an anonymous forum vs an ADA publication on the national stats. I'm always amazed with the number of people who choose an anonymous forum.

Well, joke or no joke, believing an ADA publication is easy, properly using it is seems to be a little more difficult.

Um, no. Are you making up stuff now? The scores on my notarized score report were my actual scores. An estimate of your percentile, maybe. The scores are set once you complete your exam.

I think you are missing the point. Yes, what you received are your actual scores, but we do not know what methods the ADA uses in putting together their study. Thus, the scores for the study might have changed once all scores were considered. This doesn't mean your reported scores will change, only the scores dental schools will have (the frequency tables) to consider what is high, low and average for the next cycle.

Also, it is not about believing the anonymous posters over the ADA report, it is about correctly correlating the two. If we don't know the methods used for the report, we can't properly related it to what is claimed here, and thus you can't call someone a liar just because their claimed score doesn't match up with anything on the ADA report.

Granted, this is only my theory, but it makes sense. If you don't understand, I'm sorry that I wasn't able to write more clearly. This theory is also less cynical than assuming there are a bunch of false stats floating around SDN; I like to give people the benefit of a doubt.

i choose an anonymous forum. just like how I set my clock 10 minutes faster than it really is so i am not late. it gives me the fear factor and helps motivate me to improve. just my 2 cents.

You got me ! I was so proud of my 2.9 science GPA, that I decided to place it for all to see for a few months. All sarcasm aside though, take everything with a grain of salt. I have 199 posts in my mailbox asking me for advice, while others let me know how much of a dips**t and idiot I am.

One thing for certain though - ADCOMS do read this board. The more you reveal, the easier it is to follow the trail. While speaking to students and residents at Columbia and UMDNJ following my interviews, they mentioned also how their residency departments frequent these same message boards, tagging names to locations and profiles to see how/what they post. Bottom line - don't lie and don't be a douche.

I've got you both beat:

What method do they use? They tally the number of people who got a certain score, considering only first-time test takers.

They're not trying to present any more info than that. They're not recalculating anything. Not trying to readjust any numbers for next year. It's only a frequency table of how many people got each score between Jan and Dec of 2007. You're overthinking, my friend.

I might be, but I just cannot believe that Shunwei is lying about his/her stats. If the ADA published the frequencies along with their methods (like a scientific publication) we'd know what's going on. Otherwise, I guess we're just, well, guessing!

lol this hadn't even crossed my mind. I don't see the point, you are guaranteed virtual annonimity on the interweb 😛

Shunwei may not be. He's a second time taker, so his scores're not represented on that table. We, however, don't know whether Whit took it the first or second time. There's now the presumption of a lie. Not that it matters. She's going to Harvard. She's on the Harvard facebook and all.

What I don't understand is.. why do people zero out their scores on predents.com? It is so annoying! Do they do it only after they have been accepted? Its anonymous and not a popularity contest, so why do people remove their stats and info??

Maybe people DON'T lie about their stats. You said that "Everyone says that people inflate their stats." Its just want everyone says. I think its more like, people with high stats tend to post their stats b/c they are proud whereas those with low stats tend to not post. That's why you generally see such high stats.

As for the hypothetical threads, those are just trolls. You really expect them to respond?
