Hi, i was wondering why there some dental schools with relatively low GPA compared to other dental schools. I noticed that for some dentals schools, even though the number of applicants were many like 1000, applying for only 100 spots. The accepted GPA was still low, which is around 3.1. Does this mean that the majority of the number of applicants' GPA were not above 3.1?
I don't get why some dental schools have low GPAs even though the number of applicants is more than enough. Can anyone please help me answering the question?

good question- i think it's an average

Another thing to remember is the stats that are out are usually from around 2 years ago on back. Applications are way up over the last 2 years. The numbers that I have heard are around 23% last year, and 40% this year over last year (may have leveled off and be lower). What numbers have you guys heard? Anyways I am saying that it would be hard to get in with the same numbers that people were getting in with just 2 years ago.

also, remember that just becase a school picks an applicant, that applicant doesn't have to choose to go there. and, people with good grades are more likely to have a large number of schools to choose from. so out of that 1000, half could have 3.8's and be accepted by the school in the first round, but most of them could choose to go somewhere else, so the school would have to go down the list and start picking people in the middle and lower range gpa's, who are progressively more likely to send in their deposit, as they will have a lower number, if any, other acceptances. so in the end the average accepted gpa might only end up being 3.1-3.2 if most of the school's "first choice" applicants decided to go somewhere else.

at one of my interviews, the admissions guy was talking to a prof. saying that applications are so high this year that only 1 out of every 4 AADSAS applicants will be going to dental school next year. thats just insane.

I don't think any school will have an avg gpa of 3.1 anymore. Apps are increasing at such a rapid rate that most schools are moving in the direction of avg gpas of around 3.4. DAT avgs are also rising of enrolled students. Also another important statistic are those students that get in with weak gpas but high postbacc gpas, and I'm pretty sure only their undergrad gpas are factored in. There are a good amount of postbacc students like this that get in.

wow, that's a really low percentage - wasn't it somewhere between 45-50% in the past?

when everyone here talks about average gpa's are they talking about overall, science, or just BCP? there's a huge difference in mine. i'm applying this summer and I have a 3.0 science gpa but about a 3.3 overall. and maybe 2.9 in BCP...so would i be average at some schools according to my overall gpa? thanks

Those are old stats. An example of this is Tennessee....3.3ish for the entering class of 2004 and 3.6 for the entering class of 2005. We'll know for sure when the new stats are officially released. I predict that the entering class of 2006 will average about a 3.99999998 with average DATS of 27-28's

Most schools take more in state students than out of staters. This is the case no matter what the in-state GPAs are.

One school in the East takes 36 in-state apps and 15 out of staters.

Typically the in-state students are very low in GPA while the out of staters have to be very high to gain admittance.
