Why Midwestern

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The faculty have a lot of experience (Dean Simonson opened ASDOH, Assistant Dean Gilpatrick was the Dean at Tennessee before coming here, our faculty are here because they ENJOY teaching), High Faculty to student ratio in sim-clinic, Modular systems-based method for learning basic sciences information, emphasis on ethics, Most cutting edge technology in the country in sim-lab, one of the largest wet-labs in the country, curriculum teaches implant placement as well as working with gold, and also incorproates CAD/CAM into the curriculum. Did I mention that the campus is beautiful, the students are really friendly and laid back, and the faculty LISTEN to our input and make changes accordingly (Our deans actually have lunch with students from our class every week to listen to our concerns and work to make things better!) Overall, even though I just began the program, I am very happy with the choice I made and am confident that Midwestern is doing what it needs to to make me the best clinician I can be. Does that help? 🙂

thank you so much that helps alot. is there anything in particular i should mention in my secondary that they would like to hear?

The best things to mention are the aspects most important to YOU. A predent who is 27, married and has children is looking for a different environment than a single 21 year old w/out kids. There is no one school perfect for everybody, so you have to factor in all of the variables. No cookie-cutter answers here, so be creative and I'm sure you'll be fine.

Very informative inputs!👍

I loved Midwestern on my interview. The only assurance I would like is that Dean Simonson will not leave to start another school!!

I dont mean to be nitpicky but come on...for starters

The faculty have a lot of experience (Dean Simonson opened ASDOH

Opened ASDOH? He was not Dean at ASDOH, so what does mean, he was a part of it but not Dean.

Sorry, that statement may have been misleading. Dr. Simonsen was Assistant Dean, so was still instrumental in getting the program at ASDOH off the ground.

thank you. are there any specific community service activities that the school does that i could mention. I do a lot of community service at the state im in.

Midwestern is not big on community service.

Although they might not be as big into it as other schools, they are starting to become way more involved. We've currently got Dr. Sommerhalter heading the community service initiative. As a part of our curriculum (2nd year) we're required to go out and do a certain number of community service hours in the area. We've also got an interdisciplinary healthcare course that requires you to fulfill a certain # of hours too. And, the class council has community service representatives that work to get students more involved (and informed) with community service efforts. These kind of initiatives are definitely great for the school (AND the state)--being that Arizona is one of the states that has one of the most exaggerated health disparities among racial/ethnic minorities (particularly Native American populations).

Hope that helps 🙂

Good catch and poor proofreading by me. I guess he is leaving his position as dean of the dental school to start a few residency programs at Midwestern though.

One of the dentists that I shadowed told me that Dr. Gilpatrick hired one of his former students as an instructor who is suppose to be the next Gordan Christenson
