Been wondering this for a while. Is it just because the pod students do so much stuff during 3rd and 4th years that they don't need it?

From my understanding the intern year is just exposing you to more specialities in medicine, along with giving you more hands on experience. Most FM and IM resedencies actually consider your first year an intern year (DO at least), as you rotate through multiple areas of medicine. I believe that the one year transitional medicine residency is what most consider an intern year and that it usually required to be completed before you can match into specialized residencies (radiology, radiation oncology, etc.). Since podiatry students start the specialization and school, there doesnt seemed to be a need for an "intern year" but i wouldnt be shocked if some programs consider first year residents as interns

This info is all based on my time as an intern at a local teaching hospital. If I'm wrong some one please let me know so I don't look like too much of an a** lol

Your first year as a resident is basically your intern year, when you rotate through several different services, usually IM, ER, Gen Surg, etc. That's basically the same thing that other residents do that don't have a traditional year internship. As mentioned, traditional internship years aren't required for us because we choose a specialty right off the bat and our off-service rotations are built into our residency. It has nothing to do with how much we do/don't do during our 3rd/4th year.

Ok cool, thanks. 👍
