Hi Guys,

I am another one of those lost-soul third years who can't figure out what I want to do!!

So, I've been investigating Opthamology latley. We have no rotation through it --
WHY OPHTHALMOLOGY? from those of you who choose it? can you tell me about lifestyle/options/ etcc??

What do you guys recommend as good books that give an overview into ophthalmology?

THANKS 😍

Why opHthalmology? It provides good continuity of care with your patients and is surgical, a rare combination. You should investigate this beyond the discussion on these forums and find someone to shadow in clinic. With a little digging, you should be able to find a community doc who would be willing to take a med student under his/her wing. The Lang(e?) book on ophtho is a good introduction, but try to experience it firsthand.

- neat delicate surgeries
- nice mix of outpatient care and surgery
- good lifestyle for a surgical specialty
- nobody thinks they know more about your turf than you
- have yet to meet an ophtholologist who didn't like his job. (a good number work past retirement age.) They will whine about the drop in income, but they wouldn't trade it for another job if you paid them royally.

everything else mentioned above is deadly accurate... the fifth point concerning job satisfaction is the most important reason that i chose ophtho... it truly is the greatest career out there... except for being a supa MC... booya!

Actually, initially the sentence read
- nobody is fighting you for your turf (except for the evil optometrists)

But then I thought I don't have to burden this young soul with something as irrtating as that.
Btw. Congrats on derailing the NM optometrists money grab ! And on to Oklahoma.
