Why are there so many thread topics of "Any (insert race here) premeds here?" What the hell does it matter if there are other Korean premeds on the forums, or Nigerians, or any other race? I can understand for some minorities that need suggestions based on something specific to that race, but its reeally unnecessary to simply do a roll call. Quit cluttering the board.

why are some people so uptight. who cares just skip the thread and move on with your life.
 
dude relax..its juss a community within a community..its fine to me as long as everyone respects one another and doesnt throw out any racist remarks...I started the Nigerian thread so i can share some similar experiences, stories, etc. with my fellow Nigerians..thats all..thus far it has really been successful and informative..so its not a bad thing to start an ethnic thread..not everything should be gpa, mcat, and extra currics...
 
Personally I don't care one way or the other whether they start a thread, but I don't think the AMCAS and similar things should be allowed to inquire about race or ethnic origin.

I don't really care that much, either, i guess, i just don't understand it. And I agree that race/ethnic origin shouldn't even be a factor in the med school application process.
 
the race factor in the med school app process is widely exaggerated among premeds. it is a very small factor.
 
I must say I enjoyed the "Any cyborg premeds out there?" parody thread, though.

redpen, i imagine this is a serious issue to you as you've dedicated 20% of your total posts to it. hahahah why the beef with koreans and nigerians? it seems you forgot one other race that is taking up a lotmore space on the boards: the texans, or those who hail from the republic of texas. they'll got about 6 diff threads. if you're gonna discriminate, at least be an equal opportunity discriminator.
 
And I was about to start something for dutch premeds. Never mind.

I agreee.....bringing up the race question is just plain out stupid........what does race have do with all of us trying to get into medical schools?

Good point. I guess theyre trying to be consistent with everything else in America that inquires about race... but I was just saying that race is not necessarily "factored" in like in some undergrad processes and if people talked with admissions officials they would realize that

With all due respect, what evidence do you have to support this assertion? At my school there is significant preference given to URMs. At the time of their initial application, they are put in touch with the 'Dean of Diversity', who personally coaches them on how to maximize their chances for admission to our school. The Diversity Office runs them through numerous mock interviews and gives exensive advice on completion of their secondary applications.

Maybe this is necessary because my school is pretty much in a 'white bread' area and URMs might not otherwise feel welcome here ... I don't know. But it doesn't seem to be a 'very small factor' here.
 
Any Asian female premeds in this thread agree with the OP?

With all due respect, yes your school may be doing a fair amount of urm recruiting, but like i said race is a small factor in the actual admissions process and decision making. Upon submitting an amcas app, there is not much that the applicant can be told to better his/her chances (that the applicant does not already know). I'm sure that non-urm applicants to your school may receive advice if they inquire, but since the urm students at your school are being "recruited" then they just do not have to inquire. What kind of edge will be gained by giving advice on secondary apps? This does not equate at all to being a factor in admissions decisions.

Secondaries weigh very heavily here (YMMV, of course). Ours had a lot of essays, and advice on what to say & how to say it, along with extensive editing services, could provide a significant advantage. Also, I think the previously mentioned practice interviews could be quite helpful as well.
 
And no, these services weren't available to non-URM applicants.

I have been asking this for 5 years.
 
I went on a good amount of interviews, and do you know how many black people I saw...10? All 10 were at black medical school interviews. Out of those 10 black people, do you know how many were guys?.....1. As you are applying, sometimes its nice to know that you aren't the only one out there. Its a basic principle of life; people commune with those whom they share similarities. Its a bloodly online forum; leave it alone because there are thousands of other threads.

Also, most of the race threads are spoofs of the real ones.

Dude, I go into like, all the random race threads and read them and post anyways. It's not like you're not allowed into the threads just because you're not of that particular ethnicity, lol.

Personally I find it kinda interesting, since you'll see people relate about culturally specific things whether it's food or being beaten as a child because you got an A-.

Seriously though, it's not like the threads say you're not allowed in if you're not black/white/korean/chinese/nigerian. I'm pretty sure I've posted in like 4 different ethnicity threads, and only one was my own ethnicity, lol. And I'm also sure that I wasn't chased out by people with pitchforks in any of those threads, lol.

So get over yourself ok? Maybe go see how people are relating to each other in those threads, lol.

Plus seriously, some of those posts would make NO SENSE in a regular thread. Observe:

"My parents beat me with bamboo sticks when I was a kid, because I went on a field trip and bought souvenirs. In fact, the bamboo sticks were the souvenirs. I had so many injuries it hurt like hell to even try to sit for the next 2 weeks. And one time they beat me so hard the bamboo sticks actually broke."
Reaction in regular thread: Other members stare at you with jaws wide with horror, proceed to ask why you didn't tell your teacher and have your parents arrested.
Reaction in asian-themed thread: Other members one-up you with more violent beatings, proceed to make you feel both at home and lucky that you hadn't purchased ninja throwing stars as souvenirs.

"Man I can't wait to go home and have some kimchi and bibimbap, and blood and rice vermicelli stuffed inside of pig intestines (yeah sorry, I'm not actually korean so I have no idea what koreans call this, and I don't even know what it's called in Chinese other than pig intestines with blood stuffed inside)! Oh boy!"
Regular thread: Questions about what bibimbap is, and EWWW WTF PIG INTESTINES WITH BLOOD?!
Asian thread: Oh yeah pig intestines are delicious, have you tried *fill in probably much more disturbing dish involving either genitalia or animal you usually run away from on a plane*

It's fine with me too, and I understand the desire to bond with people of similar backgrounds! Only drawback is that it perpetuates the "left out" feeling amongst many SDNers that ethnic/racial groups always found so unpleasant and unacceptable. It was my impression that the only real "group" here is "medical school hopefuls", which crosses all ethnic and racial lines. Everyone is in the same group here, actually!
