why do medical schools prefer undergrad gpa vs a graduate school gpa? are grad school gpa's inflated? It just doesn't make much sense because you would think that a graduate gpa would have more weight since you are studying on a higher level.

Well, I think one big reason is that the majority of students are only going to have an undergraduate degree/gpa...because it is a competitive process, comparing one student's ugpa to another's is more realistic.

I think that is also a big reason why pretty much everyone is required to have the typical prereqs.

Not being in grad school, I can't really comment on the experience or to state whether or not grade's are inflated. I think that the chances of you having a better GPA in grad school might have more to do with the fact that you are hopefully studying something you are really interested in, so motivation will provide better grades.

Grad school GPA inflation is only dependent on the type of grad program you are doing.

first let me say Kriss is partially right in that everyone has a ugrad GPA but not all have a grad GPA so that gives a level field for comparison.

Now consider that ugrad GPA requires a lot more competition among students whereas this is not true among grad programs outside of SMP and even there most SMPs are only 20 students outside of the 3 oldest programs so there is not competition. The courses are not graded on a curve against each other in any SMP only against a medical school curve whereas for ugrad you are graded against your peers.

Thirdly, people rarely if ever fail out of their grad programs and if they do they wouldn't have a degree with anything less then 3.0 whereas a 2.0 still grants you a degree for ugrad. So some people feel that they can't gauge an equal comparison.

ahh i see. thanks! yea I suppose it makes sense. still sucks though because your undergrad will always haunt you :-( BUT im working on fixing that now so it shouldn't be too bad soon. thanks for the help guys!
