Why would anyone ever become a colorectal surgeon?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
last time i checked, diagnosing or treating many forms of medical ailments was pretty disgusting.

It's ass, though. Ass is different. It's on a whole new level of disgusting.

Besides, your friends/acquaintances will know you as the "ass doctor"...

I couldn't stand looking at disfigured anus for the rest of my life. Is it out of interest? Good pay?

One put it to me like this: "I can actually cure a lot of my patients."

Compare that to the rest of adult medical practice and you'll see his point.

Carribean MDs would lol

Because bowel resections are fun and exciting? It's not all anal polyps and 'roids, you know. The CR people at my place do a lot of work with the GI guys, have their own endo block time, etc...

Kindly get the f*** out of medicine. That is all.

Tough guy! ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Apparently duder likes disfigured anuses.

To answer the OP, I think you could make this argument for almost any specialty in medicine (e.g. who wants to look at disfigured lungs/bones etc)

Because one day YOU might get colorectal cancer and require treatment. Try asking that same question to your doctor in the future.

I just googled anal polyp...those things look nasty...

And rectal prolapse looks delicious....

So they can put the ASSMAN license plate on their car, of course.

5-star thread. I agree with OP

I could not look at ASS all day everyday...

unless I was in Brazil.

👍

But I feel like there are a lot of specialties that many ppl think are disgusting or weird.

I personally could never be a pediatrician. Or a medical examiner or whatever (who wants to look at dead ppl all day every day?) And I think unless I can be a gynecologist of the stars, I could never do Ob/Gyn...just saying.

Haven't you ever volunteered in a hospital (outside of the ER)? Pretty much everyone's naked anyways.

So do nasty compound fractures and faces in need of reconstruction. Burn victims even scream when you redress. Let's face it, there aren't many fields in medicine where some intestinal fortitude doesn't go a long way. Even the "cushy" fields like derm have their moments (just look through a derm photo atlas, and don't even get me started on opth...).

I've shadowed some GI docs for some considerable hours, and I have to say it's not a bad gig. I can imagine that colorectal surgery is a lot of the same in terms of the medicine side of what a gastroenterologist might see, but the field has the additional procedures that go with surgery. Why do people go into Ob/Gyn? Why do people go into Urology? Why does anyone go into medicine at all (speaking strictly from the eww-factor perspective)? There's nothing distinctively more disgusting about butts than anything else one might encounter in medicine.

I was dx with Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis when I was 10. I suffered through 6 years of severe pain, 5 hour infusions every 6 weeks, self injections, being on 8 pills a day for years, having a moon face through middle school because of medications, and eventually ended up getting an ileostomy which I have had for 3 years.

I know what it's like to have GI problems and I intend to try the hardest I can to become either a GI physician or a colorectal surgeon so I can research possible cures, treat children who went through what I did or worse and serve them the compassion and understanding they deserve, and help dispel the stigma of talking about anything "icky" which this thread seems to spew (the result of which leads to young children and young adults being afraid to talk to their parents or doctor because they think it's too disgusting).

The ASSMAN license plate would be pretty sick too. 🙂

Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.

I imagine once you've seen a stranger's manky anus more than 10 or so times it's all the same anyway.

I took that 150 or so "What Specialty is Right for You" questionnaire which had my tops three as urologist, colorectal surgeon, and OB/GYN. Apparently I like the exits of the human body?

I would do it if I found it interesting. I have no shadowing experience with it so I can't really comment on it now, but I could see how some people would enjoy it.

Which one was that? Was that the Pathway Evaluation questionnaire?

Colorectal surgeons do more than "look at asses" all day. Last time I checked, both the colon and the rectum were internal organs.

Next time you spout off about how gross it'd be to deal with xyz body part every day in x specialty, I'd check to see what you're talking about. Plus, in medicine a little maturity goes a long way.

I am actually considering ob/gyn, urology, and general surgery as my top specialty choices. Am I a "dirty" person? People have real problems and need real help with those "gross" parts.

Take a chill pill missy 🙄

I'm a nursing tech on a gastrointestinal/colorectal surgical floor and I love my job. Working on this floor wasn't necessarily my first choice, but I've come to enjoy it a great deal. People have many different reasons for wanting to go into the field of colorectal surgery. As a previous poster mentioned, a lot of the patients we see actually get better, and when they do get back on their feet they are usually very, very grateful for the treatment they received. It's a refreshing and rewarding experience. Also, OP should take into consideration that perhaps the doctor treating these patients is simply very interested in the digestive system and it's biology. It's not all about a$s.

It really takes a special person to be willing to work in this specialty. It's a sensitive and embarrassing situation for the patients needing the treatment and it takes a very understanding and compassionate doctor to be able to put the patient at ease. Someone has to do it, and people willing to dedicate their life to treating patients with colorectal illness/disease are usually very selfless and admirable people.

That would be true if he could make it to medical school. With his level of maturity, I doubt he would make it through the interview process.

Why were you even born??

You guys are no fun...

I just hope I never have any of these people as my doctor... really guys, grow up!

I'm going to ahead and assume you have very limited clinical experience. That being said, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and believe you simply still have a lot to learn about medicine.

Wow...here's what I got on that:

Thank you for making that assumption.

Anyway, since all of you are replying seriously to my initial post, it's necessary for me to state that this thread was intended to be a lighthearted joke. I do realize that colorectal surgeons serve an important function.

Nominating this for most ignorant post of the day

Haha....especially since colorectal surgery is a fellowship of general surgery, which itself is highly difficult for a caribbean grad to get to begin with.

Colorectal is a field within general surgery like any other. Once you get more clinical experience, you will learn there is nothing really disgusting about any field within medicine. All are necessary in some way. Some people just have different preferences.

For now you should focus on other questions, such as perhaps: "Will I get into medical school?"

This seems pretty repetitive so far, I'm just over halfway done, but I think this one has a better feel to it: http://www.smbs.buffalo.edu/RESIDENT/CareerCounseling/interior.htm?self-assessment.htm

Edit: Yeah what morning just put up...guess there isn't much difference, who knew?

Hah, I took that one and got colorectal as number one again. After reading more about it I could definitely see myself being interested. Seems like a lot of interaction with other doctors, diagnostics, and surgical procedures.

I just hope I never have any of these people as my doctor... really guys, grow up!

That's the point...you won't.

OP you're going to make a terrible doctor because you don't think colorectal surgery is the best thing since sliced bread.

I couldn't do OB/GYN. I could do colorectal surgery. It's not because I'm "immature" or "grossed out" but because I asked a male OB/GYN if he could ever look at them the same way again and he said:

"No."
:scared:

It's not that he doesn't think colorectal surgery is the best thing since those free 30 second porn clips, it's that he doesn't seem to realize there's a lot of medicine that is just as or more gross than that.

I've cleaned an ostomy stoma many, many times...you get over poop. If there's literally nothing more disgusting in medicine than poop and buttholes (and I know there is) then anyone should be good to go because you just become inured to it after awhile.

I don't endorse usage of SDN Godwin's Law though 😀

I fully support increasing awareness of this issue 👍

You guys are behind. You can get hours of continuous free streaming nowadays.

On a side note, I think my original question has been answered. Mods, please close this thread....
