As described by their website.......

WICHE's Professional Student Exchange Program enables students in 13 western states to enroll in selected out-of-state professional programs usually because those fields of study are not available at public institutions in their home states.

Exchange students receive preference in admission. They pay reduced levels of tuition: for most students, resident tuition in public institutions or reduced standard tuition at private schools. The home state pays a support fee to the admitting school to help cover the cost of students' education. State support and program participation affecting students are subject to change by legislative or administrative action. The number of students supported by each state is determined through state legislative appropriations.

For dental schools, here are the participating states:
Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Wyoming

😕
Anyone have any idea what the "reduced levels of tuition" works out to? I know here in AK, we are obligated to repay the state for these "support fees".

Just trying to determine if this is truly a good deal.

Also, how are you notifying schools that you are involved with WICHE?

I don't know about all your questions but I know that in order to get wiche support at my school I had to fill out an application that my school provided to be certified a wiche resident.

I'd ask an advisor at your school, I think they'd know best.

Yeah, I had to get approved for the program too. Ours is handled through the state, not the school, and they are slow. They just sent me the paperwork for me to sign last week.

I did ask one school if I needed to notify them that I was applying as a WICHE student, and they (OHSU) said that just based on my home state, they had already assumed I would be. That was good, but I don't know about the other WICHE schools.

Go to WICHE website and choose your state and program u r interested. Then it will take u to a page with schools that participate in DDS program with Alaska. You do not have to notify them that you are applying as a WICHE applicant. The schools eg like OHSU maintain a separate WICHE applicant pool and give priority to residents of state u mentioned earlier over other out of state applicants.
For our state (NM), we are required to practice dentistry fo every year of funding received. WICHE pays the difference between in state and out of state tuition, but at the same time has limit on borrowed funds.

That would be nice, but unfortunately, as of now, AK residents have to repay the loan. Not quite enough need to attract dentist here that they would forgive the loan. You don't have to return to the state though - as far as I can tell. (I believe I asked the program coordinator this too)
