Hi, all.

I'm currently a first year undergraduate Kinesiology student with aspirations of medical school. I enrolled in a business course, thinking it would be one way, however its not quite what I thought it would be, I'm far behind and lost in the course.

I've been thinking of withdrawing from the class but I am aware it will leave a "w" on my transcript for it and for the academic year I will only be at 4.5 credits..

I'm wondering if it will greatly effect my chances of getting into medical school.

Hey man, he asked a serious question and must be nervous, throw in a /s or something 🙂

You should be fine OP, just bounce back, and if it comes up in the future mention how you weren't ready for it and learned from the experience. Its only your first year, but don't make it a habit.

take the W, dont risk the hit to your GPA, 1 W wont make a difference at all, just dont have your transcript riddled with W's.....GUARD YOUR GPA DAWG

Nah I had a ton of Ws in early college but here I am at a great school. Just don't make it a habit and confine it to first year. You're still figuring stuff out, but by next year you should have college figured out enough that you don't get any Ws. Again, just try to not get any more if you can.

What about No Pass(or No Credit) marks?
From Pass/No Pass courses.

I had 5 of them bad boys on my transcript...

I had two W's. That number is less than the number of schools I was accepted to. You'll be fine, just don't make a habit of it.

1 W, especially in a non-required class isn't going to affect anything. I had a W in Physics (long story) and it didn't come up at an interview at all when I applied a few years ago. I wouldn't worry about it, but on the same token I wouldn't make a habit of it.

Has 1 W in animal behavior class. You will be fine!!!

No I had 1 W, and 1 NC ( I was failing the class, so I did Pass or Fail, and NC was fail, and it didn't get reported in my GPA, it was ignored). I got 10 interviews, went to 6, got accepted to 5, and waitlisted at 1 (they called me late cycle that they had a spot for me, but I declined)!

Had a W in physics. Retook and got a B. Not in Med school yet but I have an interview

I have about 10 W's from freshman, sophomore and junior year. Honestly I didn't try as hard as I am capable and put more effort in EC's.
Can I bounce back by doing well in an extra semester?
Would I have to do a post-bacc, even if I have average GPA?

No. Had a W though I retook the class later with a better professor. Never even came up anywhere in the application/interview process. If it's not a med applicable class I can't imagine anyone cares.

A few W's are probably better than C's and so on. I wouldnt fill my transcript with tons of W's. But 3, maybe 4 over your career is pretty acceptable. I have 2. Got into Western's DO school. dont fret. Especially if its a non science course.

No. Why do you think it would?

Yea, I would start looking into nursing programs.

If you are really concerned about your GPA, I would withdraw it. During my junior year of college, I withdrew 1 advanced math class. I'm applying to med schools this year. I have been offered 6 interviews so far and received one acceptance!
One or two Ws on your transcript won't make a difference!

Good luck!!

I have 3 W's on my transcript from when I first went to college. But since returning to college I've had several semesters of over 3.5 GPA. I'm thinking of dropping a class because I don't need it for the university I got accepted to. How much would this hurt me?

@Goro What do you think?

It WON'T hurt you! Why is it so hard to convince you guys that even a an F won't hurt as long as your gPA is good.

The only time W's hurt is if it gives the appearance that you're GPA salvaging...like a W every semester.

That is a good news... W's don't hurt as long as you don't do it every semester to save your GPA.
I've done that on my first year. I will definitely stop now.

Food for thought: If you're trying to salvage your GPA by massaging it with strategic W's, how will you be able to survive med school, which will be 3-5cx the semester load, and you can't W from anything???

Wait, that's right.. you are on a 4-year track with no way to back out. That's scary.
I just did it because I wasn't able to handle course works...
I will definitely improve this year and next year as well.
Thanks for waking me up. This is going to set myself straight.
