I'm currently enrolled in microbiology at a CC. The date to drop without a W has passed, but since that time I've decided not to attend the school I needed the class for. The other schools I'm still considering (UCSD and UCSF, if I get in) don't require it. I'd like to drop it so I can work more hours and save up more money, but I'm wondering if there's a chance it will come back to bite me. For instance, will it affect my future residency applications? Do they care about pre-pharm grades? Thanks!

it won't help you that's for sure

Would you have a 'I' or a 'W'? A 'W' won't hurt you at all, assuming you don't have a ton of them. A 'I' is another story.

It would be my only W, and I have no I's.

it's not great, but there are plenty of folks who get accepted to pharm school with a W. especially if it will be your only W and the rest of your grades are looking pretty good.

Thanks everyone! I guess I'm not that concerned about getting IN to a pharmacy school since I've already been accepted to UCSD. Just more worried about how and if it will affect job/residency applications? Do residencies even look at pre-pharm transcripts?

They'll look at professional grades, not pre-pharm.

I actually talked to an adcom today that said they'll look at both pharm and pre-pharm transcripts for residencies, so I don't know. Maybe my best bet is to just stick out this class...ugh.

You paid for the class! Get your money's worth and besides, you will need to know the material for pharmacy school anyway so why not get a head start. I am in the same situation also, I am taking economics since I needed it for half the schools I applied to but the school I will be attending doesn't require it. I stuck it out and I'm trying to do well and learn. It is hard though to have the motivation...🙄

Yeah, well actually my company paid for the class...but having to reimburse my company for the cost of this class will be nothing compared to the money my company will pay me for working more hours...so if I really want to "get my money's worth" I'd drop for sure. It's not really about me being lazy. I've "stuck it out" in many classes I didn't need or like. It's more about me being able to save up some money and use my time for more productive things. But of course, I don't want to do anything that will come back and bite me later.

probably a stupid question but what is an I?

I had 2 or 3 W's and I got into both schools I applied to. W's are better than C's, that's for sure.

She's already gotten into one of the hardest schools to get into. She's more worried if it'll hurt her chances when applying for residency.

Money isn't everything. You'll be taking Micro in your PharmD program, but finishing off this class will make it so much easier. If you have no W's, why start now?
