I plan to take this course, which is under the Anthropology department. It has an additional lab section that instead classifies it under the Evolutionary Biology department; however, I don't think I'll be able to fit the lab component into my schedule.

So if I take it just as an Anthro course but with the course material otherwise being the same, Human Evolution, would it count as BCPM?

Course topics include speciation, taxonomies, evolutionary evidence, comparative anatomy, evolution of non-human primates, fossils, hominids, more fossil evidence for organisms leading up to homo sapiens, etc.

What shows up on your transcript? Anthropology ### ?

Its an anthropology course and should be classified as such.

Yup, shows up as Anthropology.

But I was under the impression that BCPM isn't by the course's department on your transcript but whether 50%+ of the course content is BCPM related, which would be Evolution of Humans in this case.

You are aware that Human evolution is an anthropological topic, right?

This.

2016 AMCAS Instruction Manual pg. 39:

"The department offering the course is typically not a factor in the course classification. For example, a course should be classified as Biology if the primary content is biology, regardless of which department offers the course."

Yeah, I thought it counted as Biology because it's evolution, too.

'Human evolution' is part of a subfield of Anthropology known as biological anthropology or physical anthropology. Human biology is a interdisciplinary academic field and given the content the OP specified, depending on the course level, there is legitmate justification for the class to be classified as a part of the BCMP.

ETA: OP, ultimately it is up to you. I think the classification as biology could be legitimate based on the course content you described depending on the level. It seems like the worse that could happen is you take the course and AAMC moves it from BCMP to AO. If you are interested in taking the course an think you will do well, go for it.

Okie dokie. If they have to move my course classification how much will it delay my app?

I took a similar course (with the same title, but without the offered lab component) two years ago, and applied this cycle through AMCAS. I had it counted for BCPM without any noticeable delay -- you should have no problem.

It won't. You can mis-classify everything and it won't delay. There's a list of things that will delay verification in the AMCAS instruction manual.
