So here is my situation.

I'm applying for the 2017 cycle. But because I did poorly in one of my science classes, I won't have the required GPA until after this fall. Will I be too late to apply in December once my retaken class will be posted to my transcript? Is there anything I can do to help myself get out of this bad situation?

Thanks
Chris

Depending on your grades and MCAT, December may be pushing it, based on anecdotal evidence in those I have seen apply on the later side. My two cents would be, submit your primaries and MCAT early and then maybe just update schools around December.

What do you mean by you won't have the necessary GPA though if it's an issue with just one class?

Is this science class a prerequisite or upper division course? It maybe an issue if it is a prerequisite class and the grade is below a C.

The class that I did poorly in brought me down to a science GPA at 2.94

Once I retake the class, my science GPA will go up to a 3.4 but I won't have that on my trans up until December.

The potential outcomes of your situation are:

1) You get put on pre-interview hold pending your final re-take grade
2) You get interviewed, but get put on a post-interview hold pending your re-take final grade
3) You get interviewed, then accepted/rejected outright before you get your grade back

There are obviously risks to your strategy to apply, but if you feel confident about the rest of your application (letters of recommendation, MCAT, EC's), then I would say go for it! This is especially the case if the class you are re-taking is not a pre-requisite (ie basic bio, chem, phys, orgo).

For what it's worth, I was still taking Orgo 2 + lab when I applied, and while I was placed on pre-interview holds at a few schools, I was accepted outright by my top choice school. 🙂

Best of luck!

I would wait a cycle.
I guess you just took pre reqs and no additional science classes? That's the only way I can see a 2.9 going to a 3.4. That's fine and dandy but I wouldn't apply with a sub 3.0 GPA and submitting past Novemeber you're on the later end of things. It's better to apply once with your best application than twice.

Unfortunately there's also a high risk of outcome number 4: getting screened and rejected pre-interview. If it were me, I'd apply to one school to get in the system, then update the application and add schools once your transcript is in-- but that's understanding you're going to be applying very late and waiting another year would be safer.

Any chance you could do the retake over the summer and submit in August/September?

Good point! I should have paid more attention to OP's current sGPA! Less than a 3.0 would definitely pose the danger of being cut by the numbers alone during initial screening.

OP, if you could take the course in the summer (as suggested by ortnakas) and submit that grade with your primary application, that would be more ideal!

I would definitely take it over the summer if I can find a school that offers it. I live in rural Oklahoma and I'm looking for a zoology class. Does anyone know of one that is online?
