I'm a 3rd year and have decided on doing a general surgery residency. I'm from Texas and am hoping to stay in-state for residency. I have mixed feelings about my stats and was hoping to get some input as to my chances of matching and not having to scramble or do a prelim year.

My stats are:
Step 1: 223
Grades: Mostly "Pass" with 4 "High Pass" (I got a "P" in Surgery rotation because I missed the "HP" cutoff by 1 damn point!)
Research: One project as primary author and two other projects as a co-author (all in surgery)

I should have good letters of rec lined up. Any thoughts as to how worried I should be? Thanks in advance for your help and comments.

I did, and based on Step 1 score and research experience it looks like I'm average. I'm pretty curious as to what my effect my school grades will have.

Meet with your school's program director. That would be the best person to ask in terms of how competitive you are. He should be able to tell you how competitive you are in terms of other applicants, and probably tell you what programs you have a realistic shot at (especially in your region). Plus, it gives you a chance to talk to him, and that's always helpful if you want to match at your home institution.
