I will be a D1 next year and everytime I start talking to some of my friends (who have had D1 roommates before) about my social life that I have planned for next year they look at me and roll their eyes 🙄 and say something like, "Do you HONESTLY think you'll have a life?"

So, my question is how is the first year of dental school? Will there be spare time to relax or hang out with friends? If it's really that bad when (if ever) does it get better?

It probably depends on the program, but on the whole I would say that your free time will be significantly reduced from what it is now. Dental curriculums tend to keep students very, very busy during the first two years. I'd hold off on filling your dance card until you see exactly what you have gotten yourself into.

The quality of questions that come to this forum make me wonder what admissions committees really look at when they accept people 🙁

You've already planned your social life for the next year? Awesome.

You'll probably have more of a life than the single mom working 3 minimum wage jobs. If you are so worried about it why go to school in the first place. Just be happy you worked hard enough to get in and accept that the next four years will take up a significant portion of your time, and thank God that the admissions committee were able to see past your immaturity at the interview. I suggest you take a year off to gain some perspective in life and return to school with the mind set that even though four years of your life will be spent in training, the remainder of it won't be burdened by physical and financial strains that the majority of people in this world live with everyday.

A little bitter? Don't be too quick to judge, you have no idea what my life is like.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Most of the time I wondet the same thing. However, Dental students forum is not that bad yet but Pre-Dental is just you know what I mean.

Who are you to say...."suggest you take a year off?" Some people need to relax a little.

If you are a avg student in class, you will still have time here and there to relax and enjoy your environment. It is up to you to be efficient while you study. My first year has not been that bad at all. I hear 2nd year, 2nd semester is CRAZY. Can't wait :scared:

lets just say I usually feel guilty about sleeping at night cause there is so much to be done for school 🙂 but I also know I'm a very inefficient studyer who needs to take a lot of breaks and doesn't focus very well... if you can really sit down and study for a few straight hours each day you should have a little time left over to relax. but no matter how you slice it you can still expect to be a LOT busier in dental school than in undergrad.

As far as first year is concerned...I'm just finishing it and it really wasn't bad at all. It all depends on what kind of student you want to be...if you're happy accepting Bs and Cs instead of As...You won't have any trouble at all finding a great social life while in school. yes, there'll be some weekends where you'll go out monday, tuesday, thursday, friday and saturday night...but around midterms and finals you really can't...although just last weekend I ended up going to a concert friday and then out on saturday even though we had 4 tests that week. Like I said, it all depends on what you want to get. You're not going to get any kind of decent answer from most of the people on this board because the majority of them are looking to get As and would probably cry home to mommy or daddy if they got a C in a class. Dental school is all what you make it.. People here will tell you that they wouldn't want you for a dentist if you only got a C in physiology..which just goes to show their true anal nature. Things like histology, biochemistry, and neuroanatomy for example have such a small impact on your actual dental skills that as long as you passed the class and the boards you have more than significant knowledge in that particular field. Just focus on your dental classes, learn what you need to know to make yourself a good clinician...and the most important part of that is going to be PEOPLE SKILLS. Just about every study that I've read on doctors says that bedside manner is how the majority of the world judges a doctors skills... Granted we aren't MDs, but I'd pretty much assume that we're judged on the same kinds of things.

I know I got a little off track there but..I''m pretty much saying you'll have as much free time as you want..You'll WITHOUT A DOUBT have time to hang out with friends, have a boyfriend/girlfriend, go out drinking...you will, theres no question about it. Theres only a small majority of the class that doesn't have that time..they're either going for As and want to specialize (or can't handle getting anything less), or they just can't learn material that fast. But the solid majority of the people do have time for other things, whether it be drinking, watching endless tv, or having a part time job as a stripper. I know your dental friends are saying that you won't have any time at all..but from what I've noticed, people in dental school make an over exaggerated big deal about everything. they get an 88 on the test, they say it was totally unfair and way too complex of a test and feel the need to complain about every question to the professor...they're also the ones who line up after EVERY class to talk (suck up) to the professor about the lecture (I basically equate this to fishing..they ask the professor hundreds of questions on what and what isn't going to be on the test to get an advantage). I also remember every new second year telling me that I needed to go to every class, you can't skip or you'll fail, you'll never have any free time, you can't go out on weekends, blah blah blah. None of it proved true at all. I got to a max of 5 classes a week. and I'm not some super genius by any case. Now all these same second years who told me how hard first year was going to be, are saying how hard second year is....While it might be harder, the grass is always greener on the otherside. Dont' worry about free time, you'll have it..Don't worry about grades, they don't necessarily mean you'll be a bad dentist..I could care less if my dentist can dissociate between the rectum and the large intestine underneath a microscope. all I care about is if he's filling the right damn tooth...

and to a side note to all those people asking the question 'how can people ask these things...what would admissions committees think'....who are you?? I know this profession is filled with mormons but..c'mon, don't be such tools.. Half the people are going to be dentists because they want a relaxed fun filled life...cut some slack and relax...if they want to drink on weekends in their free time, who cares.. Not everyone is socially ******ed like the majority of dental students seem to be....

I appreciate your candor in this post. The fact that you classify the different factions of students makes total sense. Many of us (who have no clue) are just looking for some realistic insight as to mentally prepare for what is to come. Even if you have done well in all of the prep classes, it is natural to wonder if you can hack it medical or dental school. So, thanks for shedding some light on what it is like. 👍

everybody can hack dental/medical school it doesn't take smarts.. just some hard work. i have always been told a monkey can do it 🙂

candor is always refreshing....thnk you for the post. i abridged it as a quote and i hope you dont mind.

however, allow me to remind you that your post applys well to those who are going for GP. do you think that SDNers are generally the type that does not want to specialize? i suspect that most SDNers are the type of students who would line up after the lecture and thus your post hardly applys to them. on the other hand, we do not know the intentions of the OP? if he/she wants GP, then i hope he/she reads your post. 👍

D-school was very hard for me. But did that mean that I never had any fun? Hardly. Weeknights the first 2 yrs were shot, but Friday and Saturday I took off. Life sucks around test weeks. The last 2 years were cake as far as free time...but I'm definitely pretty fried after 4 years. It's not easy. Much harder than college. Easier than med school.

I'm really surprised to see that so many people getting into a business where proper communication skills and understanding are key to a successful practice would dog on someone so much for asking a question such as this. I think that anyone with a life outside the computer room has asked themselves this question at least once. When your patient comes up to you and asks if using Listerine is really as effective as flossing, are you going to laugh at them because you know better?

I think a better question for cba to ask might be: "Am I going to be surrounded by a-holes for the next 4 years?"

Unfortunately, the short answer is "yes." It's not everybody, but there will be plenty of jerks in classmates, faculty, and patients alike. That's one of the biggest things that makes dental school really suck from time to time.

Here's your answer: Do you have a life now? If so, then yes you will have a life in dental school. If you currently have no life, dental school will not change that.

he definitely is, the other day i passed by him when he was coming out of the bathroom with his loupes on looking incredibly pissed off, and when i asked him "how's it hanging" . . . yeah it was awkward

Ouch.

Unfortunately it was all blurry with the loupes and I made quite a mess. Apparently anything below my waist is out of their focus range. As dentists we need correct posture even in the bathroom...don't want back problems later on...On a side note, I've already filed my complaint with oroscoptic on this matter...cause I'm definitely not see'ing 2.5x magnification.

I personally don't need the loupes.

Its the girls who need them.

to get back to the matter at hand..this just proves you'll still have a life in dental school. here I am, two finals tomorrow......procrastinating

yeah i'd just rather be procrastinating at a bar
