Hi all, I am majoring in Medical Technology and was wondering if the courses in my major will count towards my sGPA for DO school? I post here because I have found conflicting information that says that Medical Technology courses do indeed count and info that they count only if the major is through the Biology department. Any medical technology majors care to share some insight? Thanks in advance and good luck

Some probably will. I used my discretion when I was listing my radiography classes and AACOMAS didn't seem to have a problem with it.

I had a similar concern. I'm doing biomedical engineering and wasn't sure if i could use my own discretion or if they all needed to be included as science. By my own discretion I obviously mean that the higher the grade, the more likely it is a "science" course 😉.

Hey guys a bit of an update, I am starting my program and was wondering from those who majored in medical technology which courses in the program counted on your sGPA? Courses such as body fluids and parasitology would seem to count but what about the clinical internships? Also, I really need some advice in terms of difficulty of a med tech program, my school recommends that if you must work, to work no more than 10 hours a week. Thoughts? Thank you and good luck!

Hope this might help.

Thank you for the reply, but I'm not 100% sure you're interpreting this correctly. According to the instruction pdf, behavioral sciences are listed as such, Behavioral Sciences:

Behavioral Science

Anthropology
Community Health
Criminal Justice
Educational Psychology
Ethnic Studies
Human Sexuality
Marriage/Family
Personal Health
Physiological Ethics
Psychology
Social Science
Social Work/Sociology

What leads you to assume that these are not counted as part of ones sGPA?

I'm also in a professional MLS program, and my advisors say that if your GPA isn't strong, to not work at all. If your GPA is strong, then work minimally. It will prepare you for SOME rigors of med school, but beware if your GPA ~3.0.

As for what's considered sGPA or not, I'd like to know too.

Yep, never mind, lol. I found it 🙂

Per the AACOMAS Instruction Guide:

GPA and Credit Hour Computations
AACOMAS will calculate your GPA and credit hours according to the following rules -- GPAs and credit hours will be calculated for Science, Non-Science and All course work. Science GPAs include Biology/Zoology, Biochemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Other Science, and Physics. Non-science GPAs include Behavioral Science, English, Math, and Other Non-science.

Courses with AACOMAS grades of Pass, Non-pass, and Advanced Placement are not included in GPA calculations. Only the last instance of a repeated course is included in GPA calculation.

Omg I was under the impression that other sciences did not count towards sciGPA because BCP stands for biology, chemistry and physics lol.

So I guess my biomechanics class which falls under kinesiology does count sciGPA.

I remember calling aacomas about it and I thought the agent was lying to me lol

Hope this might help.
