This is not a medical advice question!!!

Has anyone here ever been tested as a possible liver donor?

My infant cousin needs a liver and they are testing family members, but right now I'm excluded from that because I have young child myself. I'm just curious about the process, wondered if anyone had been through it.

Also, what roles do pharmacists play in organ transplant teams? How extensive is their role in transplant patient care? How common are these jobs? Residency required or no?

I don't understand- how does your having a young child affect your ability to donate part of your liver? 😕

p.s. Love you quote- always think of it when my dumb fil (who's very religious) makes a dumb-a** race/orientation comment.

Because the surgery is very risky to the donor.

My cousin and his wife don't want to take the chance of another child losing her caregiver. The reality is, I'm probably not healthy enough to donate, but we don't really know.

The little girl's uncle was a match but when he went in for further testing he was ruled out for another reason.

So right now we are praying for a cadaver liver, and praying for the other family who will lose their child.

There are jobs in organ transplantation, they are usually at large teaching hospitals. Yes, they usually require 2 years residency. Try to have a rotation in it when you are in your fourth year to really see what they do.

the liver transplant program at the hospital i work at is HUGE. and the pharmacists only needed the 1 year residency if they did it at a teaching hospital. it's really interesting. i can give you the emails of the liver transplant pharmacists there if you want to know more.

Yes, I'd love to hear more about it!
