Can someone please comment on how good these Michigan programs are with regard to stability, strength of clinical training and fellowship prospects?
I went to WSU for medical school and graduated 4 years ago. I did a sub-I at Beaumont in internal medicine and really loved it. I ended up going out of state for residency, but I regretted not ranking Beaumont higher. At the time, I was scared off by the idea of a community hospital training, but after going through a tertiary center and now out in private practice, I would have benefitted more through Beaumont. Especially since I had no inclination to be a specialist.
The downside of Beaumont is that they always fill with a lot of IMGs. But, I will say, the hospital is a palace, you get treated really well there, and there is enough overflow of indegent patients from Detroit to learn. They have a 98% IM board pass rate over the last three years.
WSU is your typical tertiary care training facility. You will work hard and hopefully you have enough time to read. Great for specialties, but probably don't need to go there if you are going to do primary care. Their board pass rate for the last 3 years is 90%.
WSU and Henry Ford have signed a letter of intent to look into the possibility of strengthening their relationship. There was a press release to this effect a couple of weeks ago. Not much substance at this point since all they're saying is they are going to begin talking. Whether they're serious or it's just another shot to rile up DMC (or both) is anyone's guess. I something does materialize, I suppose there might be the possibility that WSU and Ford combine IM residencies and DMC moves to sole sponsoring theirs, or anything else you could dream up. I don't like the question marks here.
1. How is Beaumont for someone who wants to do a subspecialty later on? Any idea on its reputation for fellowships nationally?
If this were to happen, it would be rather awesome. Having heard of the patient population at Henry Ford and the possibility of research therein, I have always hoped for a medical school to be attached to it.
A radical shift of hospital affiliations in the middle of residency would be a serious drawback. I would rate WSU IM combining with HF IM as a low probability event though.
