One night or two of sleeping pill or wine won't kill you. Of course I'm not a physician and you should always consult with your physician. I'd hate to get sued before I get out.
I've had the same problem before exams. Try taking 2 benadryl with a glass of wine about 1 hour before you plan to fall asleep. Also it helps to plan for about 6-8 hours of sleep to avoid feeling groggy from the benadryl. This should work, but I would try it out some night before the night of the MCAT so that you that you're not nervous about it working.trilingdoc said:Hi, I am about to take MCAT, too nervous , cannot sleep, which one is better wine or sleeping pill, in terms of negative side effects on my health ? I know that wine hurts liver, sleeping pill hurts kidney ,right ?
Unless you actually have liver and kidney issues already, don't worry so much about the negative side effects. Basically EtOH + Benadryl = drowsiness and relaxation = SLEEP.

Thank you so much, God bless you !
If you don't take Benadryl (or drink wine) regularly, two of 'em PLUS wine may knock you on your a$$. I use Benadryl from time to time - just one 25mg tablet is great for sleeping but it is usually noon the next day before I feel like my head is truly clear. Allow a MINIMUM of 8 hours between Benadryl and need to function awake the next day.... and for God's sake don't take that concoction the night before the MCAT. 😱
I wouldn't use alcohol to help you sleep. The sleep you would get is not "quality" sleep ---- not restful, in a manner of speaking. I'd go with the sleeping pill on the short term.trilingdoc said:Hi, I am about to take MCAT, too nervous , cannot sleep, which one is better wine or sleeping pill, in terms of negative side effects on my health ? How about taking a few hours the day before the MCAT (whatever material your not reviewing won't make any significant difference) and wearing yourself out with some exercise, preferrably something outside in the fresh air that will distract you from the upcoming test and give your brain a chance to relax and recharge. I think that it would be healthier and doesn't establish the precendent for relying on chemicals to deal with stress.

how about a little Propofol and Versed, it ought to do the trick.

This is way too late of a reply for this guy but benadryl and/or wine is a very poor plan the night before an exam like the MCAT. You have to be on your toes. Many people feel groggy the next day from benedryl. The best solution will involve you getting a doctor to write a script for ambien, sonata, or the new drug lunesta. They are all about the same. However, sonata has the shortest duration of action and will have you the most on the ball the next day. What is the downside you say? Well, depends on if your problem is with falling asleep or staying asleep. If you can stay asleep take the sonata. It will work great for induction and your risks of being affected the next day are minimal. I took ambien before my USMLE and slept like a baby still scored very high on step I. Ambien helps more if you have trouble staying asleep, this was my problem on top of difficulty with sleep induction. Hope this helps someone other than the MCAT guy and I sure hope he didn't combo benadryl with wine, that was a pretty poor response. I am assuming that came from someone who really needs to get knocked out to sleep or someone who isn't that far in his medical training.
