Hi all,
I'm applying in the 2019-2020 cycle. I'm in my early 30s, and it's been 2.5 years since I finished my post-bac coursework. Undergrad gpa after college (before any pre-med courses) is 3.57. Post-bac premed gpa is 3.94. Took the mcat in January 2019 (scored 514). I have the 2.5 year gap since my post-bac courses because I repeatedly pushed back the mcat, sat for it in spring 2018 and voided it, and also because life happened (moved out of state and changed jobs for a relationship). I'm currently working as a research asst at a cancer center and volunteering with a hospice organization. I'm a co-author on several papers from my previous research job, and a co-author on one paper from my current job (I'm thinking maybe this could help show that I've been involved in science/scholarship even during the gap period since my post-bac courses).

A pre-med adviser with a lot of experience suggested that since I have a gap since my post-bac classes, that I should take a bio course in early summer and then not submit amcas until the grade posts (which would be in early July). The adviser's reasoning is that it would be very important for schools to see that I'm still engaged in classes, can still perform academically, etc. However, I'm worried that not submitting as early as possible (June 1) could negatively impact my chances at MD schools. Also, the summer course would not be a core/required pre-med course --- it would be either genetics or cell bio. I should note that during my post-bac I did not take upper division bio courses. Any input/thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

I would apply now! Your MCAT shows you're still engaged and your post-bac GPA is great (and undergrad GPA is good too). I did not take ANY extra classes when I applied because I had an acceptable GPA and the necessary pre-reqs -- my classes were 7-10 years old, and I did fine. I truly can't imagine any measurable advantage from waiting.

Thanks so much for taking the time to advise. I'll consider other factors, my schedule, etc. in terms of whether it's worth taking the summer course or not, but it sounds like the take-home message is to prioritize submitting amcas on June 1 regardless of whether or not I take an early summer course. If I decide to take the class...I think I've read that with the general amcas app, I can indicate if any courses are in progress. I'm guessing I would then either update the amcas app once the course grade posts in early July, or I would update the schools I've applied to individually.

Thank you again for all of your input.

Thank you again. Just as a quick update and another related question, I decided to take the summer course, which started yesterday. It runs through June 12th, and the grade will post on June 20th.

I'm planning on submitting amcas on June 1st without the grade for the current course so that I can get the application in as early as possible, and I'll list this course as in progress on amcas. I will then update the schools I apply to individually about the grade after it posts.

My question: if I list this summer course as in progress on amcas, will amcas require me to include the corresponding transcript (which would prevent me from submitting on June 1)? Will I need to request a transcript exception for this school (this will be the first, and probably the only course I take at this school)? Or will I be able to submit on June 1 without this transcript and not get penalized by amcas?

Thanks you all again for your help
