With the new IM SLOE form, how necessary is it to do Sub-I's for IM?

I have applied to multiple sub i's but had no luck. I wasnt aware that it was necessary and more optional, where people said it might be a risk if i have decent scores to match. However, I just became aware of this new SLOE form, which I shouldve known earlier. There is a section on SubI's, what should i do now? Did everyone else do IM sub-i's?

I think the form itself is optional, but it says the SubI section seems optional as well, says “if applicable” your school just leave it blank? Also for the SubI is there a home or an affiliated IM program? Can’t you do your SubI there??

we have no affiliated IM program, and I haven't heard back from the ones that I wanted in another state. hopefully the sub i section is optional, ill ask my school.

From what I have read, the sub-I portion is technically optional and programs will be very very lenient with what portions of it are filled out. I wouldn't stress too much about it, but maybe try to snag a rotation if possible.

I was in a similar boat but had to apply for rotations in May. Ended up applying to dozens trying to get one before ERAS opened and lucked out with AIs at decent university programs. There are probably plenty of community programs/university satellite programs with gen med and/or ICU sub-I positions open in August or September, if you end up needing to go that route.

Your school is allowing multiple AI's and SubI's? Ours said one SubI away and one within our system, but you could get away doing a related elective at another place so thats what I am doing lol

I believe we're allowed unlimited sub-I's in-system and one away

Gotcha, I read that your doing multiple AI's via VSAS so that's why I was wondering

Yes doing the SubI will help for matching not soo much for getting a letter but you could get a letter from your September rotation from a PD , if you can get it in time and submit it by end of September. The department letter is just a formality for meeting a requirement and won’t do much in terms helping you match.. IMG’s aren’t even expected to have department letters…

Exactly, the department letter is just a IM specific mspe kind of thing, it isn’t a big deal from what I see, and they are lenient about it this year, and many applicants(IMG’s) won’t even have it ..

Not required if you have the scores to back it up Step 1>230, Step 2 >240.

If you have any concerns about your education. Including being IMG/DO applying to academic powerhouses, Step 1<220, failures on your script. I think its important to give programs confidence you won't fail in residency.

Just being a DO is a concern for academic IM? That’s news to me lol

There’s an obvious difference in someone who did primarily community based rotations vs academic. I see it all the time at my program. I was even part of it at first despite doing aways (although they were in another specialty so I get some slack). DO schools do us no favors with community rotations. It’s an easier rotation as a student, but when the time comes to shine your behind.

I get it but I’ve had multiple rotations with residents and it’s written that way in my MSPE comments, is that a good thing? My school requires that at least one rotation be at a residency program in 3rd year.

I don’t think an away is necessary for you, no programs won’t know if it was academic center(in your case you probably means at a residency program since you are a DO?) based on your transcript, they may ask you about it in your interview and you can expand on it or it can come up in a LOR…

I would check the spread sheet and the WAMC thread. DM people with similar stats as you. If you got >220 on both i don't think youll get screened out at most places but its important to apply effectively.
