Hello everyone,

I've received my MCAT score and have come to the conclusion that I will be withdrawing my amcas application.

What are the steps towards AMCAS application withdrawal? My application has been processed for a few months and my primary application has been received by all the schools I listed. I even sent in a few secondaries. I have a few questions regarding this process.

- If I cannot withdraw my application on the amcas application portal would I have to contact the schools I applied to and inform them on my decision to withdraw?
- Also, would I be considered a re-applicant if I retake the mcat and apply again next cycle?

If anyone could give me any feedback that would be great. Thank you.

How low is your score? If it's at least a 505, you should go through with it. As far as my knowledge goes, you may withdraw if you wish. But the damage has been done. As soon as you click "submit" on the primary, you will be considered a re-applicant in the eyes of all applied to school for all cycles henceforth. Thus there is no benefit in withdrawing because you'll be considered a re-applicant either way. And you won't get any of your fees back. I would even consider sending a couple more secondaries to target schools within your stats range if you have the money lying around.

TL;DR You have nothing to lose so just take a shot!

P.S. Keep in mind that you MAY have you apply again next year so you should continue those activities and study hard for the MCAT

You can't withdraw your AMCAS application after it has been submitted and processed already. Not sure about what happens to the schools you sent it to though, so someone else may be able to answer that.

You would be considered a re-applicant only to the schools that you added when you submitted your AMCAS.

From the Website:

Am I a reapplicant to all schools or only the ones I applied to before?
You are only a reapplicant to schools that previously received an AMCAS application from you. For example, if you applied to School A and School B last year, you would be considered a reapplicant at both of those schools if you apply to them this year. You would not be considered a reapplicant at School C since you did not previously apply to that school.

You will indicate your reapplicant status per school in the Medical Schools section of your application.

Sorry to hear you are going through this. Been there (though not due to low score).

1. I had to call the school who'd received my primary and ask them to withdraw my candidacy for this cycle; the school officer was very polite; I received an email saying my app had been withdrawn.

2. Every school you applied to with your primary WILL consider you a re-applicant next cycle. When you fill out the AMCAS next year (which, you can thank the AAMC Gods for this), it is already filled with your current cycle data. BUT you will need to check the box for every school to which you applied and put "Reapp" which you can then state why you are reapplying and what has changed. AND you will want to update your personal statement for any dates that you included this year (like at the end of my PS I have the app cycle date so that I had to be updated).

Best of luck and I'm truly really sorry to hear you're going thru this. Felt like a gigantic kick to the gut when I withdrew - mad tears for a bit, left SDN/Reddit/etc to figure what next... and here I am.

It will be okay!!!

Each school has a withdrawal procedure. I think schools automatically withdraw you in you don't turn in the secondary on time (not a good idea).

I see, that is good to know you just call the schools to ask! I just knew that the AMCAS application itself on their website couldn't be withdrawn after being processed.

Thanks everyone for your reply!

I am an older student so this info was extremely helpful. I will be applying again next cycle and am planning on continuing to study until the January exam dates. I will call the schools I have applied to and will ask for my application to be withdrawn. Thanks again for the info and good luck to everyone!

I'm sorry to hear that you had to go through with this as well. I just recently finished a post-bacc program that I performed extremely well in. Everything was going according to plan until the MCAT. I underestimated how hard it would be to balance the MCAT with work. Let's hope next cycle is works out!

I withdrew last cycle and am in the app cycle this year. A couple of points with that...

1. not the end of the world 🙂
2. gives you time to get everything in right place (ducks in a row, so to speak)
3. time to earn more money and put it away/pay off debt/etc.

For the MCAT, I cannot suggest strongly enough to use ALL the AAMC resources multiple times since you have time now AND KA passages. Understand why - why this, why that - and then take the exam.

Best of luck!!

If you've submitted your AMCAS, you will already be considered a reapplicant regardless if you withdraw or not. You've already spent the money, why not just ride the cycle out and see what happens?
