Hello, everyone:

Background:

- High school drop out at 17, currently non-trad junior UG (age 22).
- Worked full time at family restaurant, became manager. Received GED.
- Began taking classes at CC ( Sem 1: 12 cred., Sem 2: 6 cred. Sem 3: 9 cred, Sem 4: 18 cred, Sem 5: (summer: 14 credits)
- Finished CC with 61 credits and a 4.0 GPA, 1 W. Taken: Calc I, Chem I, Physics I, Bio I, Statistics
- Transferred to large state university. Currently first semester.
- Currently taking 13 credits, 2 science courses (Bio 2 with Lab and Behavioral Neuroscience)
- Working 15 hours as private tutor, volunteering 2 hours per week

I dropped out of HS after first being placed in hospital/homebound status for psychological problems. I gradually improved, picking up better habits, self-educating, receiving treatment.

The problem is I've had trouble adjusting here, and I currently have a D in neuroscience. I could realistically bring it up to a C, but it may lower my grade in other courses, in which I have 3 A's and 1 A- (1 course is the bio lab). I understand resilience is an important characteristic sought in doctors. I also know medical school will be require more effort, but continuous insomnia (repetitive 30+ hrs of wakefulness), medication side effects, and my adjustment to the new location/educational system have made it very difficult to follow along in classes and maintain my mental health.

I think the W would be best for my own health as I adjust, and I think by the time I'd start medical school I would be better equipped.

Do you think I should receive my second W or a C? The W would bring down my credit count for the semester to 10. Next semester I will have a full time schedule again, and I honestly think I'll be better prepared for that.

I appreciate your reading of the post and any thoughts you could offer.

My vote is the W and not the C. I'm going through the application cycle right now with 5 Ws and got 3 interviews so I don't think it counts too much against you.
Btw, my mom didn't finish high school either and is a successful physician now.

Definitely take the W. Protecting your GPA is more important than keeping Ws off your transcript. Much better to have a part-time first semester than to take the GPA hit. Just make sure you are ready next semester so getting Ws won't become a habit. A ton of Ws will hurt you, but for this class, taking a W this time is better than the GPA hit.

First of all, good for you for going back to school and making it this far.
Definitely take the W. Especially if it's non-punitive (meaning, it won't affect your GPA). Like the other poster above, I had 2 Ws - one in my fresh year and one in my soph year and I'm still getting interviews. My interviewers so far have not bothered to mention them.

Thank you for the advice. I will take the W.
