Hey guys,

So, long story short, I withdrew (WP) from OChem 2 during my second semester sophmore year. I took it the next semester, worked my butt off, and got an A. How detrimental do you think this is on my application? I always wondered how much weight they gave to withdrawals, even if you proved that you could handle the material.

i withdrew from gen chem 2, took it during the summer and got an A. didn't hurt me at all, i still got 3 interviews and am enjoying my first year of vet school 🙂 and actually, i never got asked about that W. i was asked to defend my verbal GRE score haha

If you only have one W, schools don't really look at it. It's only when you have multiple withdrawals does it look bad.

Although I don't have any W's on my transcript, I have heard (repeatedly) that 1 or 2 W's will not affect your chances very much. However, be prepared to defend them, in case asked, in an interview.

Grats on the 'A'! 🙂

Don't worry about it! I have four W's on my transcript (3 due to health reasons which I can explain away). The other one is orgo 2 which I first withdrew, then got a D+, then got an A! One W is not going to hurt you in the slightest.

I also withdrew from Ochem 2 last year after bombing the first exam and I'm currently retaking it. I got 4 interview offers and was never asked about the W from Ochem at the 2 I went to. I wouldn't worry about it, especially because you received an A

I withdrew from o-chem, didn't get an A when I took it over the summer, and got into all six veterinary schools that I applied to. I bet you'll be okay.

7 W's, 4 F's, 5 C's and 2 D's here. 😱 All from the 1990's. I'm a lot different now.

Sorry to drag up such an old thread, but it was the most relevant one I could find. I'm contemplating withdrawing from my online cell bio class, as it was just removed as a requirement for the only school I am applying to that had it as a pre-req. Ordinarily I would finish it out, as I've heard it's a valuable class to have taken before vet school, but I'm concerned about finishing it on time - I have 2.5 weeks until my final and still so, so much to do...like hundreds of pages of reading, many lectures, not just review. I won't bore you with my reasons for starting so late, blah blah moving blah blah other surprise class. I have a B currently and I'm not sure if that would/could go up so it wouldn't necessarily boost my GPA. With working full time I just haven't had the energy or time to devote to studying anywhere near as much as I need to. I'm wondering if a W so close to the time I'm applying in a class I'm not planning on retaking reflects poorly on me. I don't have any other W's on my record and a strong last 45 GPA, but my cumulative is low and I'd rather not hurt my application any more. Pros: actually having time to study for the GRE, write my personal statement, and work on my other class (genetics), and maybe regaining some sanity. Cons: wasting money, the dreaded W, and maybe some guilt for taking the easy way out. Any input? Or stories of successfully completing a class in wayyyy too little time?🙂 Maybe I'm just reminiscing too fondly on the days where all I had to do after work was walk the dog...

If it's not a class you need, I'd say who cares? If it makes you feel better, you can put a one sentence blurb in your explanation statement.

As for not enough time, completing classes... It might be good practice for vet school! I regularly crammed 16-20 lectures (that I didn't attend), plus all readings from scratch in like 3 days. But it's prob not worth hurting your gpa, IMO. Seriously though, you'll need to get used to it! When you don't have the option of withdrawing a single class in vet school, you make it work no matter how little time you have or how many other things you have to do.
