Hey there everyone,

I began this cycle for admission to pharmacy schools with the utmost belief that I'd be graduating in May with my PhD (chemistry). However, my research adviser has informed me that due to some funding cuts I won't be able to graduate until next Fall.

This is particularly painful as I have accepted one interview from my number 2 and number 3 schools, and will be hearing from my number 1 school in a week or so as to if I get an interview this interview cycle. Note, I have not been offered admission yet.

Do you all think that my chances will be drastically hurt next year at these same institutions if I withdraw now (before the interview) giving the reasoning and simply apply next year? I'm hoping that admissions committees will not hold it against me considering the circumstances.

I have a 98th percentile PCAT and 4.0 graduate school GPA, which has helped my cruddy undergrad GPA of 3.05. Excellent letters of rec and decent but not over the top EC's.

Thanks for any (valuable) input.

You worried too much. I was in your shoes but chose to graduate first then apply. They won't remember you next fall when the next cycle begins. The title PhD (permanent head damage) will get you into any program.

As more and more schools are opening, the odds are in favors of the students, esp you w a PhD. Even 2s undergrad GPA and 10-20s get in now, it is crazy not accepting you.

But if I were you, I would think again about going to pharmacy schools. Seriously.

I've already checked and the places I'm interested in do not consider deferral applications.

I appreciate your comment and as I really have no choice but to withdraw my application anyway, (I'm not going to just leave my PhD after five years with only a extra semester to go) reading more about the slump pharmacy is in for an extra year probably couldn't hurt. I love pharmacy (five years of experience working full-time through undergrad), don't get me wrong, but I'm also a pragmatist. I'll keep an eye out during this extra year. I was just worried about my chances being hurt should I reapply next year.
