I am in a course right now that I believe I am going to have to withdraw from (really bad first test, out of only 3 offered). The possibility of saving the grade looks...slim, however, I've already applied to dental schools telling them about the courses I would be taking and when I would be graduating (May '05). Withdrawing from this course would push graduation back to the summer since the spring semester is already packed full of courses, and that's hoping that the course is even offered in the summer. How do you go about conveying this to the dental schools, and when do you do this?

What type of class is it? Is the class a prerequiste for getting into dental school. Or is it just for your major.

If its sceniero 1 find out if it is offered in spring and or summer. That way you can get it out of the way.

If its sceniero 2 (not that big a deal etc!)

Part of me would say stick it out, see what happens. Telling d-schools right now as they decide your fate for dental school could back fire.

I would say as a courtesy let the d-schools know that you dropped the class, but make sure you tell them that you are going to take it in the spring and or summer. Just so they don't drop your application, becuase of class technicality.

good luck

IMO.... I think that any W at this point in the game is BAD news. You have only taken one exam and there are still 2 more.. Plenty-o-time for improvement. I would suggest talking to your prof about your chances of a good grade if you do really well on the next 2 exams.

As for explaining it to dental schools... Just think about the amount of classes you need to take at the same time when you're a DS1... Personally, I wouldnt want to give the adcoms any ideas about me not being able to handle the work load.

Good luck...

I would tend to agree this this post. I just wouldn't want to risk sending the "wrong message" about handling a tough work-load. However, I can totally understand your concern... this is a "toughy". Good luck in whatever you decide to do. Just one more thing... if it were me, I would rather be O.K. with a C instead of a W.

I called a dental school and asked them specifically about a W. They asked me what class it was for and then they told me it wasn't a problem. So, I'd assume it depends on what class it is.

hello,
i had originally enrolled in an extra course (that is NOT required as a prereq. OR for graduation, purely extra). I decided I didn't like it, so I dropped it, after sending in the app.

The SAME thing is happening for my spring semester AND i also changed a course, after sending in the app.

The above 2 things do NOT have an effect on my prereq.'s or graduation date.

In January, i'm gonna have to update my grades, etc. So will the "W" look really bad? Who am I meant to justify this to, and WHEN?

Thanks

1) Sounds like this is a required course for your major, since it would push your graduation back if you miss it. This is BAD.

2) "Saving the grade looks slim". What does slim mean? If you only get a C then you only get a C. You get the credit, and you graduate. Nobody cares (trust me).

If I were you, I'd do all you could to get a passing grade and then move on. Don't push back your graduation.

Thanks all ~ Trying like a crazy woman ... Yes, it is a major required course. The average in the class is a C-. Getting a C is far far far from the end of the world for me, actually...would be jumping up and down. We'll see what happens...thanks again

Beachluvr: Maybe you should talk to the professor and explain your situation. Maybe you can do some sort of extra credit or maybe s/he can make the next 2 exams count a little more for you than the first. This worked for me. You just need to be really polite and sincere. Try, it really couldn't hurt. 😉

But be prepared with a good excuse for why you did poorly on the first exam.
