Hello,

I’m at the end of my third year and I’ve been very stressed about my specialty choice. I enjoyed all of my rotations (except Gen Surg). The rotation I liked the most was OB/GYN since I think the content and subject matter is interesting and I really connected with a lot of the patients… things that scare me about OB/GYN are the residency and attendant lifestyle (I know there are lots of different practice models out there). I also wasn’t crazy about GYN surg…

I have been doing a lot of research on OB/GYN residency programs. But I also have been doing a lot of research on IM residency programs with primary care tracks and women’s health tracks.
The programs that really stood out to me are:

1. University of Pittsburgh (very strong women’s health training and the oldest in the country; founded in 1994)

2. Ohio State University (I’m a US MD student who currently goes to med school in OH and I live at home with my parents; so good family support) I liked the 4+4 model of switching back and forth between inpatient and outpatient clinic every month; includes women’s health training —> I’m meeting with the program director this upcoming week to learn more about the program; was glad to know that she also was between OB/GYN and IM

3. University of Washington (primary care track; women’s health pathway) connection- I lived in the Seattle area for 5 years

4. Northwestern University
5. Boston University
6. Massachusetts General Hospital

I know that I need/must have women’s health in my future practice and career. I know that OB/GYN is going to give me the most extensive women’s health training

But I also like that IM primary care tracks give you both inpatient and outpatient training and you still have the option to do fellowship training if you want.

If I did IM primary care track/women’s health track, I would either open up a women’s heath/primary care clinic or work for a women’s health center OR I would do a medical oncology fellowship and hope to specialize in breast cancer and gynecological cancers

My only question is what is the salary and job market for IM primary care physicians? Ideally I want to have a salary of at least $300K, be in an specialty area that I enjoy/find interesting, and can have a good work life balance

If anyone knows of a site or list of IM programs that offer primary care tracks/women’s health tracks, any insight would be greatly appreciated

If anyone has any other feedback or insight, comments are welcome!
