Should we avoid talking about medicine in our works and activities section if it's forced? I've seen some reddit posts about people trying to do it for most, and some people trying to connect it to core competencies.

So far I've just talked about what I learned from each and the growth it helped me with. I don't know if they directly connect to the core competencies, but I'm afraid doing this will make it feel less organic. What do adcoms typically look for in the works and activities section? Unique thoughts, growth, humility?

Additionally, I have a lot of "basic" activities, but is that an application killer if I can talk about them well? There's some that have changed my life and I think I can convey that, but I'm not sure if the activity itself will be scrutinized.

What has this person done to test their interest in medicine?
What have they done during the school year other than classroom activities?
Medicine is a helping profession; what evidence is there that this applicant has volunteered time to help people?
What does this applicant do for fun or relaxation?
What evidence is there of curiosity such as engagement in research?
Has this applicant had any engagement in activitities that demonstrate teamwork? leadership? ability to teach/explain complex concepts in an easy to understand way?

As you can see, there is only one question I'm asking when I read the work & activities section that needs to be related to medicine (work, volunteering and/or shadowing in a clinical setting). The rest are telling me things about you as a person separate from any interest/involvement in medicine.
