Pretty sure this is all hogwash, but thought I'd throw it out there.

Was at recent ISIS conference, met an individual interviewing for pain fellowships.

When having lunch with him, he said that a program was considering him, BECAUSE he was willing to forego the year's salary. (I guess he had a pretty healthy savings account)

He believes that working the year pro bono would guarantee him a fellowship spot, since the program was not paying him/losing a paid spot.

Not sure if this is legal, nor do I know which program he is speaking of- Hogwash, right?

if it is a private fellowship, its not illegal. id assume that ACGME accredited fellowship would require a salary, but i could be wrong

i dont think ive ever hear of someone NOT getting a salary after residency.

I'll be starting up a fellowship program in January. You'll work 50 hours per week and the pay is $0.00/month. No benefits or 401K. I plan to recruit up to 10 fellows.

You'll get to do work-ups on all new patients and manage all opioid patients for me. You'll get into the fluoro suite to work on live patients when I declare you fit after you first practice on your fellow fellows for a few months.

Any takers?
