Working during dental school
Started by rtcmurr
Is anyone planning on working @ a job during dental school?
DEFINITELY NOT!!!!
Is it possible?
DEFINITELY NOT!!!!
How do you plan on paying your bills if you are not going to work @ a job?
Parents. Others take out loans. Everyone does it. It's not a big deal and it's so worth it in the long run.

No way, I'd like to keep my sanity, thank you very much. 🙄
I only know of one guy who works in dental school...he goes to Temple and works nightshift at the front desk of a hotel on weekends.....I'm sorry, there's no way I would stay sane.
Loans are the key....I'm not crazy about all the debt either, but for me, its the only way to go.

You must have us confused with the med students. I asked the dentist I shadowed about this. He said he only knew one guy in his class who tried to work while going to d school - and he was still there after the rest of them graduated. I wouldn't suggest it unless you want to be on the five year plan too. Just max out those loans to cover expenses.

no, take out loans. you won't find time to work more than likely.

it seems about right....
i know med students who work...never heard of dent students who do..
I think its possible, but why would you for chump change?
unless you run some internet business or some kind of easy freelance thing or something I wouldn't suggest it. . . .
At Nova, one D1 student told me that she is working after classes at school, connecting some presentation equipment for profs, as I remember. I was surprised as I always thought it's a suicide to work, especially during the first two years of a dental school having such a class load.

ok so no working... you guys mean, not even like 8 hours on a saturday??
Is dental school really that time-consuming that one can't give 8 hours on a saturday?
I've always worked with school.. so I'm wondering.

I guess if you are used to it, and you are not planning on doing a competitive residency then you will do fine working a little bit. I would start school and see how you feel after the first semester.

I worked every Saturday and Sunday all through undergrad...and I'm still doing this now, pretty much just to save up some money.
I'm kinda burned out (it sucks not having a weekend), and this is only undergrad. I'm thinking that after 8-5 M-F of dental school, I'm just gonna want to have my weekends free to regain some energy and take it easy...and study.

Sure it is. I have many friends accross the country that are on call for mortuaries, or are bartenders. It's possible.

Not for me. I really want to be able to study and then have time to relax and enjoy my "life" or what will be left of it after studying. I personally rather take out loans and then just repay them instead of not having some free time.

Not planning on it. Yes it is possible. Have you ever heard of the lil engine that could? If you want it, you can make it happen. With proper diet and exercise, (im assuming you are young (20s)) your body can function efficiently with 6 hours of sleep a night. Thats 18 hours a day you can spend in class, lab, studying, and at work a day!! Thats tons of time!!! If you want lounge time and more sleep, think about taking a loan.
The very thought makes me shudder. Sure, it probably can be done, but I'm having enough issues getting sleep in undergrad, so I'd not even contemplate though of doing 45 hours/week class time, plus study time, and then taking on a job - especially a monotonous job, as it just is not the thing to fall asleep while working. If you do decide to brave the wilds, though, good luck!

I see it this way: Sure I could bust my butt over the next 4 years and probably decrease my loans by $30,000 or so if I get the right job and work hard at it. How long does it take a dentist to earn that same amount? If he earns $120K then he'd get that same $30,000 in 3 months. Is 4 years of stressfull hard work worth an extra 3-6 months of debt? I'm sure the #s vary, but that's my estimate.
