Hi everyone!

I have been considering working during the school year, but wasn't sure about time constraints and being overwhelmed. I was wondering what other students were planning on doing. This question may be directed more towards current students, but anyone's opinion would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Nicole

I assume you are refering to current vet students. My personal plan would be to wait a month and see how crazy things are before you add a job to the mix. That said I do not plan on trying to keep a job while in vet school (vet school is the job) though I will probably do pet sitting type stuff anyhow.

I just wanted to let you (and others) know that it is not impossible to work while in school. In fact, I'm glad I work because it forces me to stop studying and apply some the stuff I'm learning. It is also nice to get away from vet school people and see some "normal" people. I only work 7-10 hours a week (wednesday nights and saturday mornings) so it's not too bad.
So I guess what I was trying to say is that if it fits in your schedule and you think that some time away from vet school would be nice then try to find a flexible job at which you get to apply some of the stuff you are learning in vet school (you'd be amazed how much easier it is to learn stuff if you know you are actually going to use it in practice!).
And also it's nice to already have a job so you can just increase your hours during the summer and get lots of experience.

Good luck with everything!!!

When i go to vet school I definitely plan on working. This year I have a crazy schedule...loads of volunteering.. school and a job. I'm going to see how crazy everything is before i get a second job but it all depends how much extra time you have and stuff. My "free time" is just spending time with my dog and volunteering - both things I love. 🙂 haha

My brother is in his 3rd year of college (not going for vet or anything but still) and he has two jobs... bartending and reffing. He still parties and gets decent grades so it is very possible. It just depends on the person.

i plan on just keeping saturdays at my job since, like Angelo said, vet school is my job. :]

A coworker and friend of mine at my old clinic in Raleigh had a great set-up -- vet student by weekday, and then a part-time Saturday job at Starbucks, plus one Saturday a month at the clinic. It kept her in the know and using her knowledge working at the clinic, and it kept her in free coffee at Starbucks.. what more does a vet student need?

haha nice
cept i dont like coffee...even the smell.

I said the same thing a year ago.
By September I had a coffeemaker.
By October I had a coffee grinder.
By November I had a stash of 5678902 different kinds of coffee.

Wouldn't've made it through first year without it!

As for jobs... I worked a few hours a week at various on-campus jobs throughout my first year. I wouldn't've been able to handle more than that, but I struggled with school a bit more than most of my classmates. Now that I've got school more under-control, I'm going to be working 5-10 hours (split between two jobs) during my second year.

eaglemeag, do you mind if I ask when and where you found your on-campus jobs? I am planning on working--preferably on-campus--and am wondering how and when first-year students are informed about campus-based jobs open to students. Thank you!
