I don't mean working a regular 9-5 job or anything, but I was wondering how much time I can spend working during medical school. A local modeling agency wants to sign me (the best in Houston) but I'm starting first year at Baylor at the end of July. Apparently the reasonably popular models work about 2 times a week for 2-4 hours. Working 2-4 hours a week will more than cover my rent and it might take the edge off the student loans. Will I have this much time to spend on modeling or should I not risk it? Any advice?

You should probably have that amount of time, except on weeks with exams. Particularly won't be a problem if some of this is down time during which you can be reading stuff. But if its possible, I suggest you start med school and get through an exam so you have a better sense of how much time your studying actually requires. Different people require different amounts of time.

Yeah, I might get the whole routine down before I started working. I babysit one night a week, and often don't the weekend before exams. Also, it's Baylor so it's not really all that expensive. I wouldn't worry too much about the money.

Do it. Even the hardest working people in my class still piss away a few hours a week. You can piss yours away and get paid. Sweet!

Yeah, I'm really excited because I've wanted to get into modeling for a long time. Sure beats the hell out of waiting tables again

I thought they only paid about 20-25 bucks an hour. I assume you're talking about promotions. Maybe you got a better deal tho.
Good luck its a sweet gig.

From what I was told, most jobs the agency books for you pay $100-$150 an hour. If it turns out to pay as little as 20-25 an hour, there's no reason for me to take time away from med school for it.

Do it! Jeez, even during exam weeks I waste at least that much time. Congratulations, and knock 'em dead :)

I work and keep up in classes with no problem. I think it's just a matter of time management. Use every minute carefully. Also the job I have is nearby, with transportation plentiful - cuts down on downtime - and my employer is understanding if I want to study if business is slow. So i'm in the backroom sometimes just studying away until the next customer. :)

Yeah, if the pay is that much or promises to increase later on, it sounds like a good plan. If you're apprehensive about it, I'll gladly escort you to these modeling sessions and 'protect' you from the Swedish bikini models who are bound to become jealous.

;-)

you'll kick ass.

Does the agency want you to do photos or runway? You can easily earn $200-$1000 per runway show which usually last 30 min max. so if you do 2 shows per week, this will surely cover your living expenses.

i have contemplated (not seriously) stripping to supplement my med school income. From what i have been told a male stripper (gay) can bring home almost $1,000 per night. Work one night a week and you are making a damn good salary. I am comfortable with my sexuality, but i am not sure i could shake my naked junk in another mans face.

I had a friend who made bank doing some modeling for department store advertisements. That stopped after he got whacked in the face by a clay pigeon launcher. After he healed he only had a tiny little scar by his eye, but they dropped him like a bad habit.

You have the strangest avatar ever. Every time i see it I can't help but laugh. what in the world?!

Thanks! It's from Arrested Development, one of the funniest TV shows ever. It's from an episode that explains Buster's lifelong fear of sheep.

I laughed my ass off at the "badger" song that your avatar references...someone told me to watch it for a really long time 'cause it's got a great ending. I sat there and watched it for 15 minutes before I figured out it would never end!

I'm in the same boat. I'll be at Colorado SOM, and the Broncos want me to be their place kicker next season for home games only. Should be just two Sundays per month and the league minimum pay is not too bad. It works out to around $1000 per hour.

Do you guys think I should do it?

I'm a little short for most runway shows (5'8) but they say I can do some shows because Houston isn't as "high fashion" as some other markets. I'll probably be doing more print work.

AD is hysterical. I just started renting the first season. I can't believe it was cancelled.

Well hell. Thats awesome. If you don't mind me asking what did you do to end up with that gig? Also do you know how often they might hire dudes?
My friend works for some agency or another in Houston. I went to their christmas party with her. She said I should try to work with them but I just kind of blew her off. Now I'm thinking that was a poor decision.
You should definitely do it. I'd be stoked about it.

Are you kidding me? heck yeah i'd do it? if you're speaking of the Denver Broncos professional football team? Talk about stress...after kicking in front of 70,000, a med school exam will be a breeze...maybe you're just kidding...if not, then go for it

Someone from Neal Hamil scouted me at the mall. I wouldn't usually take a random mall scout seriously, but I had already heard of this agency. From what I hear, you can go in on Thursday nights at 7:00pm and give them pictures. The agency will look them over and call you if they are interested. You should give it a shot if you're in the Houston area.
