I'm SO excited and yet so disappointed.

I applied to be a kennel assistant at a local vet office back in February. They never called me back and obviously hired someone else. Well, a week ago, they called me and said the girl had to move on to a full time job and they wanted to know if I still wanted the job. I said "yes, of course!" and went in for an interview.

It went really well. The tech seemed to like me (she was the head tech/receptionist) and it's a really small place--there's about five employees including the vet, an older gentleman who has owned the practice for 20 years. It's been AAHA accredited since 1946. Anyway, she basically asked about my availability and talked at me more than asking questions. She actually never asked me a single question, just outlined the job and whatnot. She told me the rate of pay ($8.50--though she said she could probably do better) and we chatted for a while.

They called me back today to schedule me for a working interview on Friday. She needs someone to start this weekend which thankfully I have off my current job. I told her during the interview that I'd like to keep my current job as well and she said it isn't a problem, because I work in mornings there and the office only needs me 3-7, along with every other weekend. I'm pretty nervous about the working interview though. 🙁

Another problem is that I'm supposed to be going away to tech school this fall. I was considering putting school off for another year and sticking around here to do a few more pre-vet prereqs before heading out next year. I still need bio and math to be accepted into the program and I can get both of those done at my community college for next to nothing. I don't want to take this job and quit in three months. The tech said they want someone long term and they'd love to take me back when I get out of school.

What do you guys think about all of this? I'm so torn. I've said my goodbyes to everyone and I'm so excited about going away but this job might be worth staying for. I'll do kennel cleaning, assist the vet and techs, do some clerical work... it's sort of all-inclusive.

Working interviews are pretty easy going from my experience. I wouldn't stress, just focus on what they are doing and what they are asking you to do (try to be detail oriented and thorough with what ever you do), ask what you can do to help them, and dont stick your hands in you pocket. Ask intelligent/thoughtful questions.

If your going to vet tech school in the fall, that is a big win. Dont lock yourself down trying to get experience when your tech program should already include internships and clinical work as a part of the curriculum. ...I dont think leaving for school should be a big problem, though you would have to decide if you want to tell them that immediately. If you couch it as you can come in on holidays/over school breaks and durring the busy summer season to help with kennels (which is when they are the busiest), they could be receptive. However, if you tell them ahead of time (like I did when I told them I was applying/was later admitted to vet school) they might use it a reason to not train you beyond the minimum level (which has made my last 5 months at work very unpleasant).
