Just wondering if it is possible to workout lets say 4-5 hours a weeks while in medical school? I would like to be towards the upper portion of my class...top 5-10%. Is it possible to workout throughout medical school? Working out in terms of lifting...chest, back, shoulders, legs...

I am guessing you can, but not during exam week?

And i do not know how that is going to be done during clinical years. How many hours do you work during that time? And what do you have to do after work, is there structure or is it more like study whatever rotation you are in?

During the first two years, I don't see any reason you couldn't squeeze an hour in either before or at the end of the day each day most days and still do well. Probably would help you focus better anyhow. It's all about time management.
After the basic science years, some rotations will probably leave you too fried to work out.

It is easy to workout in medical school. You can do it every day. I do it every other day now during clinicals. You don't study during your rotation except for the week of the exam.

During the first two years just work out while everyone else is sleeping in class..hell you can work out more than you do now.'

During third year its hard to work out and stay on top of your studies during IM, surg and for some people OB and peds (depends where you are) if you're not gonna be a real doctor anyway, like a DO or something you can work out all the time like the hydroxycut guy...why not? its not like grades matter for them right? Im not sure this is right so maybe some DOs want to comment about finding the time to work out between giving back rubs.

I plan to - and already have a few times. You need to break up the day with some physical exercise to keep your brain fresh.

yes. you should be fine.

I have recorded mp3s of lecture to listen to while I'm on the treadmill or lifting, and it works pretty well.

Dynx, I want to know where you are going to be doing a residency so I can show you up.

In terms of this thread, I have no idea about how easy it is, but I plan on lifting 3 times a week...about an hour and a half each day.

CCOM (A DO school...) Class of 2010

I get in about 5 days a week even during exams. It's no problem as long as you're used to having that sort of workout routine. however, it is a tad easier for me because I have a gym in my dorm that's open 24/7 so sometimes you'll see me down there at 2am, especially during exam time.

Hey I like the screen name, was thinking of inking one on my back when I graduate.

The MP3 thing I think this is a great idea, I did this threw out med school and it has helped make my workouts more productive. During the first 2 years of medical school I worked out 6 days a week, more then during undergrad (pass/fail school) and probably was in my best shape. My workouts serve as a study break, I go to the gym when I get really sleepy. So when I get back I'm all wired, so I can study another 2 hours before getting sleepy again. As for third year I was probably in the worst shape of my life. Gained over 3 inches of pure fat on my waist mainly during surgery and ob/gyn rotation. Not eating regularly, over eating when given the chance to eat, not working out regulary due to being to tired, and that cafetriea food at the hospital not the most healthy. As for fourth year it's probably the best more time to work out now more then ever. As soon as fourth year started I worked out 7 days a week to lose all that third year fat

Well, I'm still trying to lose my MCAT fat! 😀

I hope to get the chance to work out once med school starts (tomorrow :scared: ). Since our schools also downloads of audio lectures online, I'm thinking about grabbing notes and mp3 and heading to the gym to study and listen and burn fat. If I do this everytime I study, I figure I would be pretty buff by semester's end. 😀

Med school does not equate with the end of your life. You will have time to work out, hang out with friends/family, party and do whatever else you want.

I worked out every day for at least 30 minutes and made sure that when I was starting to nod off while studying I would get up to do some push ups, lunges, squats or jumping jacks to wake myself up (five minutes here and there really does add up when you are studying for three hours a day).

I don't think I ever studied on the weekends unless we had a test on Monday or when I was studying for the boards so, I worked out then too (did longer workouts).

In my third year I didn't have as much time to work out but, I tried to get to the gym after the early rotations and before the later ones (it takes discipline to get up at 5:30 to workout but, being healthy is worth it). And now I work out every day religiously since I'm a fourth year pretty much on vacation. I highly recommend yoga for anyone that needs to unwind and just chill.

Good luck - and please, please don't let med school take over your life. Its a job, just like any other and you need to have time for yourself to remain normal.

In the hospitals around here there are fitness centers located within, idk if everyone has facilities like that to workout in during thier clinical years.
Working out takes more time than an 1 hour because if you life heavy weights you become tired afterwards...

So when you are tired, working out makes you wake up? Idk but it would wake me up for 1-2 hours and then I would just want to sleep again more than before...

I manage to exercise for at least one hour a day for 5 days a week. I joined a swimming group that meets every evening and we go through a workout. Of course, I'm also not in the top 5% of my class.

I don't understand how people who ask such ******ed questions actually got into med school.

what the hell was the point of saying that? It is a legit question...im betting you dont workout and are ridiculously out of shape...

Really, it isn't a legit question. Med school requires no more time than college for most. If you read countless numbers of threads about it, you'll see that plenty have time to do other things.
You would be surprised by the number of medical students in the gym, most if not all are in there 4 times per week.

im still undergrad, from my perspective it is definately a legit question. Umm many would disagree with same studying time in med school as in college...

anyways...question answered, thank you...

I think it's fair to say that for some, med school is a LOT more work than college. Sure some people get by on less and do well, some do less and have lower aspirations, but those two categories absolutely do not include everybody, and there are certainly those on here who are burning the midnight oil pretty regularly. That being said, I know of no one who wanted to work out and couldn't find time to do so in the first two years.

You have to realize that some people get off on making others feel stupid - and these boards are peppered with those types. So, just try and weed out those answers 😉 Best of luck getting into med school!

Thanks, ive been accepted through an early program BA/MD..2 more years before i start...just curious.

Thanks Everyone.

You will have time and should continue to workout.... for your sake and as an example for your future patients.

i don't go to lectures anymore.
as a result, i've got more time to study and study effectively, more time to play, more time to workout, basically more time to do everything. i'm very happy with my grades etc too. it'd be a bit more of a squeeze if i went to lectures, but i go to the uni gym, so not that hard. my workouts are usually 45min each, 3 times a week. so yes, it's easy to fit in fitness and med.

the only caution is that it's far far easier to waste time instead of doing what you should be, like i am now 🙁

I plan on attending all lectures simply so I don't have idle hands and for other obvious reasons. If you don't need to that's great, but I thought attendance in meds was mandatory. Is this one of those things that depends on the school?
