Working where you want to go to medschool

I just got a job in the trauma surgery department of the hospital where I want to attend medical school. Do you guys think that will effect my chances of getting in in a positive way??

I think it would help because it shows a specific interest in that hospital. Also, you will probably meet a lot of people who, if asked by the admissions folks, can give an honest, reliable opinion about your candidacy for med school.

Hey focus,

I do the same thing. 99.9% of the MD's that know me from the hospital have given me nothing but help and encouragement in my quest to become a doctor. I say as long as you haven't burned any bridges at the hospital and you have a good reputation as a good worker, this will help you get in.

Congratulations on your new job. I hope it helps you in gaining admittance. At the very least, you will gain valuable experience. I'm a registered nurse and plan to do some moonlighting as a nurse while in med school. However, I want to stay clear of any setting affiliated with the med school because people are likely to confuse the two roles (nurse vs med student). Good luck in your endeavors.

Focus I am doing the same thing. I think that it is advantageous since you will get to meet alot of people who can give you insight as to what that school looks for. In addition, it shows the school that you are truly interested in them.

It definitely won't affect your chances in a negative way, but I wouldn't say it necessarily gives you any solid advantage. You have to keep in mind that in all likelihood, you are one of at least a hundred hopeful premeds doing the exact same thing. Do it for the experience itself, if nothing else.

I think there's probably about 5 of us pre-meds working at Mount Sinai that are applying...so so much for thinking it'll be an advantage
