To all pharm students. How feasible is it to work while in school your first and second year. And if so, how many hours are reasonable 15-20?

Thanks

oops, sorry. that thread helped. I had figured 15 hours would be reasonable.

I think only me and jdpharmd plan to work.

When I was at MWU-CPG, I and several others in my class worked between 30 and 40 hours per week. It all depends on how well you manage your studying and how much (or little) of a personal life you want to have. The pay for interns in Phoenix was quite good, so I didn't mind working.

I plan to work while in school...however I know that in Utah (if accepted tomorrow) that I can't work as an intern until after my first semester of school....

However, if I go to MWU-CPG what is Arizona's law? Can I be an intern right away? Also, is it hard to find an intern job...is it competitive...or what???

Amanda:
I don't go to school in AZ. However, according to AZ statutes http://www.pharmacy.state.az.us/R301-305.htm
the prerequisite for licensure as an intern in AZ is simply current enrollment in good standing at a board approved college or school of pharmacy...just like here in NV and in CA. You'll need a letter from the college's registrar or Dean's office, or something that proves that you are currently enrolled. You'll probably get a copy of the intern license application at orientation or shortly thereafter. If not, you can get it here: http://www.pharmacy.state.az.us/internapp2.pdf

As far as competitiveness for paid intern positions, all I can relate to you is what I see here in LV. Positions at Rite Aid/Sav-On/Wags/CVS are the easiest to come by. They seem to need quite a bit of help...they're building pharmacies left and right in Vegas. The highest paying intern job in the Vegas valley is with Vons (Safeway) supermarket. Because there are fewer supermarket pharmacies, all with relatively lower script volumes, intern positions are harder to come by with them. Needless to say, the few students in our class who work for them are quite popular...always getting asked for the "hook-up". 😉 Also relatively difficult to get are hospital intern positions (like mine).

I can't say this is what you'll see in Glendale/Phoenix. Here in Vegas, NVCP is the only source for interns in this rather large city. Lots of pharmacies...one school of pharmacy.

Lot's of luck with Utah! But I know that if you end up in MWU-CPG, you'll be in good company, and you'll do just fine! 🙂

amanda, why would you want to go to a 4-year school i.e. utah when you have been accepted to a 3-year school. 3-year schools are tougher to get into then 4-year schools(i think so). 3-year schools allow you to make money faster and more fun time in the strip bars(just a joke to those of you who take life very serious).

Heyyyyy
That makes sense...however...think about one semester at MWU costing almost as much as the entire 4 years at Utah...

Plus I live in Utah...and I'm a military brat...some military brats like to move around...however I'm one of the few that never wants to move ever again!!!!

I worked in school. I found 20 hours to be almost unmanagable with 10-15 to be about right. In LA, we have a 1500 hour experience requirement due, hopefully, before the start of clinicals. I would have hated trying to get all these hours in during the summer. I personally think 10 hours provides for great experience, helps tons in learning the drugs, and gave me a cool over $100 per week of spending money.

AmandaRxs,

MWU will give you a letter that you turn in with your application to the state board in order to get licensed. I think they give them out during the first week of classes.

Like it was mentioned above, the amount that you are able to work will be dictated by your ability to keep up with school. I was able to do 20/week at one job, then drive 4 hours to Minneapolis and do another 15 or so over the weekend (doing overnights) (then drive back). I held a 3.4 in my 3rd year while doing this ( Missed Dean's List by 6 points in Renal. D'oh!). I didn't really need the money-my jobs were more of a social release for me. I would have gone crazy not working.
