Is it possible to hold let's say a part-time CS job while in med school assuming the job and school are close enough? Has anyone here done it or have a friend who has done it?
Maybe. Most people who work in med school do shift work (pharmacy, EMS, ED work, tutoring), which is easier to schedule around school. Unless you are talking about help-desk type stuff, it might be tough to not bring work home with you. I would tend to think the deadline sensitive nature of CS work would be prohibitive to a student.
Definitely possible but I wouldn't do it unless you have a lucrative gig. If you're good and have stable hours (say 10 per week) you could do this either freelance or with a steady employer.
The thing about freelance is that there are many out there doing this and it might not be worth the stress. If, on the other hand you have an employer who has work for you and pays well then why not.
To me it's not worth it. The wages earned while working during med school is a drop in the bucket compared to what we owe. Might as well spend the same amount of time to try to study harder and match into a more lucrative specialty
I'm not working a CS job, but I do work in an engineering research lab with very flexible hours and the work does include some basic coding. I'm only doing it because I like doing research and I'm hoping to get more than a few publications. The pay is decent, but if my gig wasn't in research, I wouldn't be doing it.
It's your call whether you want to work part-time, but med school does require a significant time commitment. My social life has been quite negatively impacted trying to excel at both my job and in school.
It is very, very hard to hold a full time job while in medical school. It's perhaps doable during the first two years especially if you don't need to go to class/only have to go once a week and can otherwise do stuff online or whatever. However, this isn't college. You have to study on a regular basis and you would have to sacrifice any social life you have in order to study/prob spend a good number of sleepless nights.
Many people do work-study programs where they might have a desk job that lets them read/study most of the time while "working", but that's mostly it.

I worked part time last quarter. Honestly, it kept me focused (personally, I focus better when I have more to do). Esentially, I never attended any school activity that was not manditory and could set my own hours (all telecomumitng) with work. The work was pretty lucrative (paid a bit more than $100/hr), so, it was a pretty good deal. I had this same job/client before I started medical school, so it was a pretty natural transition. If you are a solid, self-motivated, independant worker and studier, it might be ok.
If you have set hours and a location you have to be at, I would imagine it would be quite draining. Make sure you are doing ok in class and won't be burning yourself out.
