working with FMGs/IMGs

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
But anyway, you CLEARLY don't know much about living in other countries. You say that its the ***** way out to leave? I agree with you only in SOME cases. In cases where the governments don't lock up or execute those who speak. The system is bigger than one person, and when the army will break up protests with machine guns clearly it's bigger than the masses too. Sometimes, no wait - MOST times, the doctors are helpless to make changes.

And listen, where a person is born has nothing to do with where his/her loyalty lies. Perhaps loyalty lies with a principle and decree rather than with some nationality that we were born into with out choice.

They don't necessarily contribute to a brain drain either, although I'll admitt I like the catchy description. There are usually plenty of intellegent people who stick around and you know what - check back on them around retirement time. Ask them how much of a difference they were able to make.

Your entitled to be frustrated, if you insist to be, on the tight market. But if that's how you feel why don't you take it up with the immigrations office. It is they afterall, and not the FMGs they allow to enter, that pre-determine the quotas based on what they think would be best for the American economy (and whatever other intricate considerations they take into account). Don't take it out on the FMGs man, they're not the policy makers here.

And just wondering, what makes you think you know anything about the lifestyles in Egypt or Pakistan?

First off, Im not blaming FMGs for a single damn thing, **** read my posts more carefully: my point is they are coming here bright eyed and getting used by the system. I had to sit through lectures and talks where people derided their poor English skills or watch in absolute horror the conditions they accept merely to be here.(I have known boarded physicians living a 1-bedroom apartment with 2 kids, wife and grandparents, its insane). Crap, I spent countless hours at hospitals proofreading their reports so they didnt get fired....

To address you other points: One person CAN make a difference, regardless of political and military opposition they face. History is filled with examples. I would say Dr. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna is a fantastic one (although I strongly disagree with his politics). If an Egyptian physician feels Islamic/government oppression is such that he cant practice there, then why not fight for change, if not for himself for the generations to follow? Maybe you are helpless to incite change, but lets not entrap the whole medical community in your impotence.

The brain drain from foriegn medical communities is HUGE and real. Especially in many parts of Asia, people are literally dying as a result of a lack of access to quality care and I hope FMGs that come from those countries can sleep at night knowing their BMW is friggin parked in their driveway safely while kids back in their home country are sick and dying....(I probably could sleep at night but then again I freely admit I can be a dick)

I would argue many if not MOST FMGs are NOT here fleeing tyranny as you suppose (almost laughable IMO but I did address it), they are here seeking a better life, be that work conditions, money, material goods or all of the above. Sure as **** it isnt some intangible love of freedom or a burning desire to practice here regardless of financial situation.

Your argument is tired and getting repetitive and you are clearing being defensive, emotional and irrational. Im not here to call the INS/Homeland Security on your BF/SO/Husband-whatever so chill.

I don't think I've said anything irrational, and I'm actually pretty calm. I just think you're making very bold statements about things that you have very little real life exposure or experience with.

I'm also not worried about you calling anyone on my husband. I do however feel that you are very edgy, and as I said you have a lot of turmoil under your skin. I don't wish to continue this conversation anymore. I seriously recommend that you travel and see the world a little. Stay somewhere besides a fancy tourist resort and try to see how other people live.

For your sake, as well as for those who interact with you, I wish you luck in opening your mind a little.

Umm Im not edgy at all, I think what you are sensing is called "transference".

I think you walk around your daily life hyper aware and stressing people are going to think ill of your Egyptian husband. If anyone does say anything, you lash out as a defensive mechanism, unfortunately only revealing your inner insecurities even more. Im sure you stick to big cities, worried that traveling too far out into the countryside might trigger a redneck encounter....let go of the fear that controls you...once again Im not here to call Homeland Security on anyone.

Transference is a phenomenon in psychology characterized by unconscious redirection of feelings of one person to another. For instance, one could mistrust somebody who resembles an ex-spouse in manners, voice, or external appearance; or be overly compliant to someone who resembles a childhood friend.

LOL.....well said. I think he just needs a life........a proper one, not an internet one. haha.

Honestly, in this conversation with you I kept in mind general concepts towards general members of the global society. I was not mentally centered on my husband at all. In fact, he very seldom entered my mind. I have never felt inclined to defend him or anything silly like that. He is a grown man, and there really is no point to defend in his case.

I also never feel worried to travel with him. What state of mind do you think I live in - constant fear? That's a little unrealistic. If I was that uneasy about it Iwould have never married him. We're both very laid back. We travel freely to various states and he is very well received and liked by those he meets. I never ashamed or afraid to introduce him to anyone. On the contrary, I am always proud to be by his side, double so when I see the respect he so easily earns by those he meets. You speak of things again, of which you know nothing. Is this a habit you've taken?

Hell NO! The worst thing a man can do is get married in medical school or residency (unless you are marrying a smoking hot radiologist or dermatologist or something like that). An MD male's peak years for pulling hot chicks is the first few years after residency. I ain't getting married until I'm 38 or older and my wife will be 24-28.

There are some cute girls in pathology, but smoking hot ones are few and far between based on what I've seen at USCAP and IAP. Derm/Rads/Peds are what the hotter medical students girls go into.

Yes I will. It is a great feeling knowing the best is yet to come (especially relative to age. Of course I had 19 year-olds when I was 19 and 23 year olds when I was 23, but it will the schiznit having 24 year olds when I'm 40, and even better when my still fairly hot 40 year-old wife is servicing me when I'm 60). I got it all planned out.

Towelie is gonna have to agree 100% to that.

Hey DPL, you have finally posted something I completely agree with, especially the part about not getting married early in the medical eduation process. Strong work.

You know what else a lot of hot girls go into? NOT MEDICINE. My point is, why labor on Dermatology chicks when there are tons of exotic dancers and kindergarden teachers out there?

edit: I was totally distracted from why I came to this thread in the first place. Yaah cut off that other thread before I could post this:

Dunno but my guess would be that the $$$ factor of a highly paid woman would offset the risk factor in marriage.

Which in turn could be offset by a nice pre-nup!

This thread, as I supposed, was initially thought to discuss the 'problem' of FMG's/IMG's working in pathology departments in the USA. So, here I am: FMG from Europe😛 . I'm resident in pathology. Actually, I don't want to work in the US🙄 . I've only planned to participate in 28th annual course on 'Current Concepts in surgical pathology' held on Harvard in the beggining of November. Do any of you know anyone in Boston who could offer me and my colleague, consultant in pathology, a place we could stay during this course? I would be greatful for your help.

That's a silly and uninformed statement, and you had best be careful in proceeding further. If you have legitimate posts to make, please make them. But making inflammatory posts for the purposes of being inflammatory is childish, silly, and really doesn't serve any purpose.

Wow ive been looking at slides way too long. I saw this post earlier and thought it said " I don't look like FMG's at all" I thought that that statement was a little weird. No more slides or Hasselhoff music videos on Youtube for me today.:luck:
