hi

i know we talked about this before, but i was just wondering if anyone changed their views since school has started? is anyone going to work while in school, and if so, how many hours are you planning on working?

i have workstudy, so i'm tutoring kids for 4 hours a week, and then i was planning on working in a pharmacy for one full day on the weekends.. sound doable?

hope everyone is having fun studying!

I'm currently searching for a position in community pharmacy (I've long tired of my job at a hospital). I'd like to work 2 days/10-12 hours per week. It seems like the majority of my class is working at least that much.

Today, one of our clinical professors (who has served on the CA Board of Pharmacy) told us that even though CA was certain to adopt NAPLEX + MJPE (with essay 🙁 ), they would not change the requirement that you must complete 900 hours of employment (ie, paid) as an intern in a pharmacy to sit for the exam.

So...working while in school isn't just a good idea, it might just be necessary for those of us "California-bound" pharm students. That is, unless you don't mind working as a pharmacist out-of-state to make-up those hours upon graduation. 😉

Working one full day on the weekends is fine for now...do what you feel comfortable with in terms of your schoolwork. As you go on, you may find that you can spare some of your afternoons/early evenings for additional work hours.

LV, I have a solution. Don't go to California!!!! Pleeeeease!! There are 49 other ones, ya know?

😛

One of our courses this semester requires us to get an intern license. It looks like we'll end up getting them in October. I think I'm going to wait for that before I start working. I think I'll feel better about things if I wait a bit to see how classes are going and how much study-time I'll need.

You sound like you're begging me to stay out of California! Don't worry, I'd probably end up at a Rite-Aid in beautiful Bakersfield, living out of a double-wide trailer...gotta go where the money is!

Maybe I'll provide "pharmaceutical care" by using my advanced chemical knowledge to run a crystal meth operation on the side.

Wow, so you've been to Bakersfield before? 😉

It would have been more apropos for me to have said "beautiful Clovis, California"...

...On second thought, you could pretty much list out any central valley community, and it'd still work 😉

wow.. i thought my school was the only lame one that was making us wait until oct to get our intern license... i was quite upset when i heard the registrars office say that new students have to wait til the seminar in oct to register...but i guess it's not so bad now. i could always use the extra time now to study.🙄

I barely have enough time to watch lectures, do homework assignments, outside practicum projects and fit in time to study. There is no way that I can work. We were told at orientation not to work unless we really, really had to. I know why, now.

They pretty much told us not to work, but we'll see. Some people define work as like 30 hours per week + school. I see it more like 8-12 hours per week.

There's a steady rain. The winds haven't really picked up, yet. I don't think that it will be that bad of a storm, we just need to worry about flood levels. Most the rivers and lakes around here were already dangerously high.

Wow. You're school is really runnin you guys. I actually think the skej as far as classtime is pretty reasonable at SC. It's a lot to study, but they're really progressive about keeping you in class. But, when you're supposed to be in class they're all gestapo. The director of admissions walks around the lecture and monitors who's there or not. It's kinda creepy, but it's cool that he takes his job seriously.

Dana,

Is it true at UF that you are only "allowed" to work 10 hours per week max?

No, they recommend that you don't work more than 10, but you are free to do what you want. Are you applying to the St. Pete campus? That's where I'm attending.

I have not decided which campus to apply to. I live in Lakeland, so I am 1.5 hours from both Orlando and St. Pete. Any suggestions?

I'm doing one sunday every other wknd during school at Wags (sweet 16 hrs a month hahahahahahaha) I've actually taken a pay hit after becoming an intern from a tech. Craziness.

I am scrambling trying to find something, either retail or hospital, but I have no pharmacy background as of yet. I wonder how much luck I will have, and what kind of wage I could expect. 🙄
