I realize everyone here is talking about rejections and interview invitations but I was wondering what is everyone's backup plan if you don't get in. I know everyone doesn't want to think about that but it may happen to the best of us. If you don't get accepted this year what are you planning to do? Get your masters? Take more school and reapply? Do you even have a backup plan?

reapply.

Reapplying alone won't do it buddy. You need to show some changes in your application, otherwise you'll just look the same as you did the year before.

Show things like: more community service, better grades, more relevant upper level classes, or research. Try and make yourself a more appealing candidate.

In my case, I picked up a reasearch job, bettered my grades, and bettered my DATs. I am currently a full-time non-thesis master's program at Illinois Institute of Technology. If you applied for the second time with little or no changes, the outcome will be the same as the year before. Good luck to everyone.

I didn't say blindly reapply...😎

No I understand, I wasn't knocking your suggestion. Reapplying is definately your first step into wanting to get into dental school 🙂

I was just suggesting other things to do to improve your application.

yea, no one ever wants to think about this, but not everyone can get accepted. I do not have a backup plan just yet, but I am very interested to hear others. post-bac? research? improve DAT?

Take extra courses, get a master's degree, and get additional experience in a dental office. After that, it should only be a matter of time before you are admitted.

Here is my story, my first two years were at community college, due to having a family and not knowing that it is somewhat frowned upon at the professional school level. Rather than applying after my first year at the 4 year school, I waited until I had two years there, after graduation, to apply. Needless to say I have this year off, so, what did I do? I took a job teaching biology at the local high school. May not be for everyone, but this was my backup plan.

This exsact question was asked at my last interview, and from what I understand it is not an uncommon one. Take a class or two, actualy study for the DAT get a job and reapply...

this question was asked in my last interview and my response was, "you will see me sitting in this chair again next year."

jb!

I choose the only honorable route, seppukku

-__-

I did seppuku last year and now I think I have a chance. Well I also took more classes, retook DAT and reapplied earlier, but the hara kiri does make an applicant stand out.

I dunno, apparently your seppuku was unsuccessful...and we all know how dental schools are with lack of commitment and failure. Might want to bandage up the intestines and hope they don't notice the blood trail...

So...what you're saying is...you think that would make one stand out in a bad way?😱 Dang!

well you should definitely do something productive to make your app a little stronger, but in some cases, simply applying earlier may be enough to get you in. this would only make a difference if you were a strong applicant, who simply waited until very late in the last cycle to apply, but my point is that timing can make a significant difference

What is "seppuku"?

😳
This is a non-sensical combination of myth and half-truths, look HERE to see what seppuku really is

Ah, the old frisbee seppuku eh? Well I think I follow... except the part about Step 5 and the butter. Unless there's a clean spot you CAN'T hold onto it hard no matter how hard I try ...I mean how hard one tries... And since that part makes no sense at all to me...

I would re-reapply. That would suck. First, I'd take the DAT and go to grad school, which would probably mean I might need to take the GRE. yuck. that verbal section kills.

I'm sure it depends on what kind of grad school you want to go to, but for my masters in biomedical sciences, they took my DAT as my entrance exam. I didn't have to take the GRE like i thought i would.

I don't even want to think about not getting in this time around... this is already my second time! Let's just hope none of us has to worry about it

Haha Armorshell grow up 🙂 🙂

I'm curious. What school took your DAT as your GRE?

If March rolled around and I had no interviews/acceptances,I would put everything together again so that the day AADSAS opened up I could hit submit, send off all my transcripts and letters, and spend six months in the homeland.
