Hi all, I have been accepted to DMU and I am hoping to cut a few interviews to save $, one being KCOM. KCOM seems very similar to DMU in terms of rotation sites, curriculum, attitude toward OMM etc but I would prefer to live in Des Moines over K-ville. Should I save a couple bucks and skip the interview or is it worth it to attend? Would love to hear from current students or people who interviewed there in the past. From my understanding it is a great place but I think I'd choose DMU at the end of the day.

I am also wondering about cancelling my interview at KCOM. I have been accepted to RVU and would prefer not to live in Kirksville... sorry I can't help with the answer but I'm looking for similar answers.

Hi! If you had other options at the time, what made you choose KCOM? What do you like and dislike about it?

Thank you!

Like
-driving distance from my home, with rotations in my home city
-very laid-back, noncompetitive atmosphere (my class anyway)
-watch lectures from the comfort of your home, and learn at your own speed
-rigorous 1st/2nd year curriculum (dislike at the time, like in retrospect)
-relatively safe place with no traffic. Generally very peaceful and conducive to studying

Dislike
-very little guidance/advice for 3rd/4th year
-you may have to set up a lot of your own 3rd/4th yr rotations. Depends on your core site
-many have not heard of the school

thanks for the info! Regarding 3rd year, are students assigned a single core site? Or do you need to set up all 3rd year rotations yourself?

I think it varies a lot by site. Students rank core sites (we have sites all over the country) by preference and are matched to a core site. I would use the term "single core site" loosely because 5/10 of my 3rd year rotations were at our "core hospital", I decided to set up 1 on my own, and I was outsourced to places in the region for 4. A few of my 3rd year rotations were poor quality in terms of teaching. I worked almost exclusively with underserved populations and my eyes were opened to a lot of new perspectives, which I think was pretty invaluable.

4th yr I have set up 6 of my own rotations . The other 5 my site coordinator helped me set up.

Also, KCOM gives barely any time to study for boards and only four weeks of vacation time during 4th year, I ended up taking 2 weeks to study for level 2. So I get 2 weeks of vacation this year (does not include holidays).
