Hello all, IL resident with a quick question. One of my state MD schools requires an upper level BIO class and an upper level humanities/fine arts class. I don't currently have either of these (health science major, so all uppper level science classes fell under HSC designation) and was wondering if it would be worth the extra $$$ to schedule these classes for the spring/summer in order to be able to apply to another state school next cycle. I currently work full-time and would probably have to take these online. I have a 4.0 sGPA, around a 3.75 cGPA with all basic Prereqs done, and plan on taking the MCAT in April.

I was in the same situation this cycle, decided to take the 2 classes, and am very happy I did. I didn't feel comfortable limiting my options that early on, and the extra courses looked nice for other schools I applied to as well. It is a personal choice though, based on where that school ranks on your list, if you have the money for the classes and the time to devote to them to do well, and how your stats match that school vs others on your list. First, I would try to discuss this with someone in admissions at that school if possible. Perhaps some of the courses you've already taken could satisfy that requirement, despite the different designation. I've heard from friends that this can be possible if you can make your case that the course you've taken should count as a biology class, etc.

This is what I always do: apply to all the schools you want early in the summer, so that they will probably give you an answer to interview or reject you before dec, and then you can enroll in the necessary classes in the winter semester if you got an interview to the school that requires these classes.
