I'm a 2nd semester sophomore. I recently switched my major from Biology to Mathematics. I really enjoy the math major more, but in order to catch up in the major I'm having to take 21 hours of class this semester. The math courses are all much more challenging than any biology class I've ever taken (5-15% will get As in these math classes as opposed to 20-30% As in biology classes). Realistically, I wouldn't be surprised if my GPA dropped from a 3.93 to a 3.80. Is this worth it? Or should I just stick with an easy major like Biology to save my GPA for medical school?

If you enjoy math that much more then stay with it.

Do what you like, you have to answer the question if it is worth it on your own

Lots of folks would give their left *integral body part* to have a 3.80. If you are confident you can do that well and still do what you like, then by all means, pursue it.

Thanks for the input guys. Hoping to get some adcoms to chime in on this. I realize a 3.8 would still be good. That would be the result of getting about two Bs this semester. What if I somehow did worse and dropped to a 3.7? Obviously I'm going to do my best, but these classes make my biology courses look like cake walks. Is there an enormous advantage to having a 3.9+ gpa in admissions?

Nobody cares about your major is, only that you do well. A drop from 3.9-> 3.8 or even 3.6 isn't lethal, so quit fussing. Do what you love and love what you do.

Depends on how much more you like math. It wouldn't be worth it to me, but I'm not a big math fan. Also, it might look odd if you kept flip flopping on your major.

Stick with the math if you enjoy it more and (especially) if you think you might put it to use in the future. Math training is very useful to have, and that came at a price of a 3.8 vs 3.9 GPA I'd take it in a second. Just make sure you still do well in your prereqs.

wow 20-30% get A's in bio classes? Our stingy bio department gives 10, at most 15% of A/A-. I would take 20-30% any day and just cruise through classes while putting time in stuff you enjoy, but if you'll get the same satisfaction doing math then go with that

and OP how can you be sure it will only drop to a 3.8? what if it drops to a 3.5? what if your GPA increases to a 3.95?

3.93 to 3.80 is not a big enough drop to deter you from chanigng. I guess my only question is are you sure a 3.80 will be the lowest? Anything lower then I would say be weary of switching but if you're sure you can keep a 3.8+ then go for it. No point in being miserable with bio if you can have fun in math
