Would it be completely stupid of me if I didn't apply to ANY Texas schools...considering that I do live in Texas? I have lived in TX my whole life, but I am ready for something new. I realize the schools in TX are the cheapest, but I want to get the heck outta here. Would it be stupid of me if I applied ONLY to private, and out-of-state schools? Especially financially speaking...would it be worth it? And has anyone ever done this before? Or should I try to take advantage of the low tuiton costs since I live in TX? BTW, I will apply in 2010. thanks

Yes, you would look ******ed.

If adcoms know that you live in Texas and didn't apply to any school in Texas, don't you think they would think you're not totally 100% serious about becoming a dentist?

Huh? I hope you are not serious. Otherwise....:scared:

That doesn't make sense... But honestly, why not Baylor? The "new" comes after where you can have a say, or more of a say, in your location where you want to practice.

I don't know. 😀

That's what one of the health advisors told me at my school, because I was thinking the same thing.

Houston... Gross...

So, it was your health advisor's opinion? Phew~ I'm relieved. 😀

Haha, yeah..

It does make sense to apply to all 3 schools in TX though.. People from all over the nation apply to all of these private schools, but only Texans have a real chance at TX schools.

AND it's just so much cheaper here..

I think it's kinda dumb. I understand the feeling that you want to move away from home and experience something new (i'm from Arkansas), but thats a short term goal. A bigger priority for you are you long term goals such as becoming a dentist to support yourself, family, etc. And by not applying to your instates, you are greatly lowering your chances of reaching this goal, but you already know this so dont be dumb.

From personal experience, I would be sure to apply to Texas schools. You stand a much better chance being accepted as a Texas resident. Hypothetically, what happens if you don't get accepted to any of the schools you applied to out of state, and you didn't apply to your state schools? Then you would have to apply again. I think I can speak for a lot of people on this board that you want to do everything you possibly can to only apply once. Being from Texas and not applying to Texas schools will look stupid. Now, the only reason you don't apply is if you have absolutely no intention of attending if you are granted acceptance... but IMO, that would be dumb. It is only 4 years, and then you can pick up and move wherever you want, and not be in as much debt. The name does not matter. Also, from personal experience... I applied to several schools out of state and was only offered interviews at 2. I did not attend one of them because I had already been accepted to other 4 schools... the three Texas schools and Nova. And I like to think my stats were pretty good. On another note... on my Texas interviews, I was asked why I applied to out-of-state schools. So it can go both ways... your state schools wondering why you applied out-of-state and the out-of-state schools wondering why you didn't apply in-state. If it were me, I would apply to the Texas schools, and pick out 6-10 private schools. I also think it is a good idea (if possible) to go to a school in an area you might end up practicing in.

You won't be penalized simply for not applying for your state schools. By applying to them, however, you do increase your chances of getting accepted somewhere. It's all about personal preference. If you knew that you wouldn't attend that school even if you got an acceptance, why apply there?

I don't know. 😀

Houston may not be the prettiest or cleanest city in the world...but there's so much to do there and honestly, there is no better location in THE WORLD than the Texas Medical Center if you're doing something medically related...👍

There's nothing wrong about not applying to texas schools. However you might regret later on that you are getting the same degree going the more expensive route in the long run.

No I think it would be great for you to get out of Texas so it might cost a little more. but dental school is not cheap no matter what

Actually, dental school in Texas is VERY cheap. San Antonio, probably the more expensive TX dental school, would cost around $80k for all 4 years. As a Texas resident, if the OP leaves, he'll most likely be attending a private school which will cost at least 3 or 4 times this much. I would say to at least apply and try to get accepted to the Texas schools too and decide later which one you would like to attend. There's nothing that says going to school in Texas means you have to practice there.

To the OP, I agree with tinman831. Don't need to apply to school where you don't want to attend. I know a couple people who did not apply to any TX schools and got in others.
Although I just can't imagine why ignore one of the cheapest, if not cheapest, schools in the nation?!
I guess some people can afford to take out 200k loan.
You know what? Those people I know that didn't apply to TX schools, had the same reasons as you. "Wanna get the heck outa TX". Oh well, let see how they like it when they're 200k more in debts by attending out of state schools.
My view about TX schools: Thank God I live in TX!

Admissions committees will neither know nor care that you didn't apply to Texas schools. You shouldn't really care if anybody else thinks it looks stupid.

Correct me if I misunderstand, but you say you'll be applying in 2010 to enter in 2011 as the class of 2015? If so, I'd personally recommend crossing that bridge when you get to it. You are planning on applying two years from now. You might change your mind about Texas or dentistry by 2010.

just apply and decide not to attend if you get accepted out of states.

TMDSAS is the so much cheaper to apply (only 195 for all 3 schools and you don't even have to pay for processing fee) whereas AADSAS costs about 400 bucks for 4 schools and you have to pay another 75 dollars or so for them to review your application.

so for the price of applyign to 1 school in AADSAS, you can apply to all 3 Texas schools and tuitions are about 1/5 of regular out of state dental schools or less.

unless you have a great stats with really high DAT which will get you some scholarships and get you in to dental schools for sure, i would suggest just apply. it's pretty much same thing so applying to both AADSAS and TMDSAS will not be much different

Yeah...I think I let my dreams and emotions get the best of me. I will definitely be applying to all 3 texas schools. By the time I apply, I will only have taken 6 advanced biology courses. I know the Texas schools, especially Baylor, won't accept me unless I have taken enough advanced bio classes. ...Is 6 advanced enough? I will have 102 hours completed by the time they receive my application. And I have no clue on what type EC's I would need. As of now I volunteer for Special Olympics, a local Mission for the poor, and I'm a member of the Baptist Student Ministry at my university. In the spring 09 semester, I'll be teaching a zoology lab. any advice?

Actually its only $75 for the three schools for residents.

To answer your question, yes. I got a question. If it is rare for someone to get accepted to dental schools out-of-state and not in their state? I thought that if you couldn't get accepted to a dental school in your state, how are you going to get accepted to a school out-of-state? In my state, there is one dental school. I am planning on applying to schools in differrent states. Back to the topic, you are lucky to have 3 schools in your state unlike most of us to apply and have a chance to get accepted to. You don't have to pay out-of-state fees which is a plus.
