So I was looking through our cc's course cataloge and they have a course that is 1 credit hour, its Pharmacology so I asked my Phlebotomy teacher about it (Shes a pharmacist and now is a lab tech) and she said its a waste so she dug in her book shelf and gave me a physicians desk reference book and said Pharmacology only touches the surface of it so do you guys think its a waste? or would you take it?

I would definitely not take it, not only is this a pharmacy school subject, it's only one credit hour. Does sound like a joke. Sounds like your pharmacist knows what she's talking about.🙄

I took it in nursing school, aced it, and now I get to use that in my PS. No, it wouldn't be a waste. A waste would be if you took basketweaving. Are you nationally certified? If not, take the class, and try to get certified. That'll help your app.

Well, since it IS only one credit hour, I have to question that. I took a course that was 3 credit hours called Psychopharmacology and the Addictive Process through my school as an elective, and I found it quite interesting. I actually reccommended this course to a friend who is also in the midst of applying to pharmacy school. I actually learned a lot, but I forgot to say anything about this course in my PS now that I think about it. 🙁

Why is a pharmacist working as a lab tech and teaching phlebotomy?

From what she told us, she went to work at a pharmacy the first day and couldnt take it, she said it was very boring and she likes the challenges lab techs face and it interests her. but thanks for all the answers i think I might take it after all.

So let me get this straight. Depending on how long ago she graduated and where she went, she lost three to four years of her life and is/was close to 80k in debt to quit the first day she was a pharmacist?

Kinda smells like BS to me. I am not saying your full of it, but maybe your instructor.

Well she did go to school in the phillipines, so I dunno if she couldve worked here with that or could she? I dunno how it goes but yeah when she said that the whole was likw wtf how stupid...lol

One of my instructors was held up at gunpoint on her FIRST day, and yet she still has been practicing pharmacy for years. I would pick bored over that anyday.

Ive been a lab tech, Ive been a chemist, and my goodness, IMO nothing could be duller than looking at petri dishes and HPLC printouts all day. That was the reason I switched from that to pharmacy.

However, to get back to the original topic. Its only one credit hour and probably not a lot of work, but it may help you to familiarize yourself with all the drugs and general actions before you get to P-school. Got to the bookstore and look at a copy of the book. If it doesnt look dumbed down too much take it, especially if you need an hour or two to round out to full time credits.

I do not recommend reading the PDR. It is not remotely interesting unless its a drug you are actually taking. Doctors rarely even look at it until they need to look something up. 😕

Thanks for all the reponses but Ill try DownonthePharm's idea by looking at the book and seeing if its actually worth it. thanks again everyone.
