So last summer (2010) I took part in summer research. After getting back home, I emailed my former PI maybe once or twice just to update her and let her know what was going on (I was in a bit of a transition period) and what my plans were.

In one of the emails, she replied and said that she was going to put me as coauthor for the paper they were trying to put out by the end of the year. This emailing was in October. Since then, I emailed her again around February/March updating her, but haven't emailed a third time.

I KNOW that it takes awhile for papers to come out: I've been working in another lab after getting back home from the internship since August, and we are working on putting a paper together now...

But what it would be rude to email her and ask how the paper is going? I'm just really curious... I've been searching her name on PubMed every week to see if anything pops out but nothing's come out yet.... I mean, I want to know details! What journal it was submitted to, can I even see a draft, etc.

So do you think it would be okay to email and ask? Or should I just be patient and let her let me know or find through PubMed when it does eventually come out?

Publishing takes a very looong time. as u already know it isnt a walk in the park. If u get published, it will eventually show up in pubmed so no reason to be budging the PI. In this case since it has been a long time since u communicated I think u can shoot a mail and talk about your progress, and talk about how much your experience at her lab is helping you now...and in the last sentence you can ask in a subtle way...btw what is the status of the paper was going to be published?

If u have contact with the lab members I think u shd get your updates from them.
