Sup guys.

Those of you that receieved OHSU's secondary know its kind of a strange prompt: How will you measure your success as a medical student?

Strange to say, but I'm at a loss at what to say. I mean, once your in everyone is on a status quo studying hard to become a physician. Im trying right now, and all I can think of is personal satisfaction.

Can some of you guys give some more ideas please? thanks!

Most people stated their goals. I mean you just have to read the prompt. It's asking you to assess success. Most of the time that involves goals or evaluations. What works for you to know you did well? Especially if a program is P/F. Ask yourself these questions and then relate it to your ECs, experiences, and it writes itself. I thought I'd have to write a completely different essay with this one, and I end up using a lot of my secondaries. Having said that...I haven't heard from them since 😀. GL!

I tried to focus on what success means (gaining knowledge, being able to apply it, ability to work on a medical team, whatever you think. . .) and what skills get you to that point. And I talked about past life/educational experiences throughout to show that I have those skills. So that was my approach. And it took me for freaking ever to write that essay.

Took me a while to write it too.

I focused on my goals in applying to med school and how I would attain them as a medical student.

I took it as a chance to talk about keeping the human side of medicine. I basically talked about how doing well academically was a given and an outside measure of my success as a medical student, but that my own measure would be how my in the emotional health of my patients. Basically, don't become a jaded a$$ (but I said it much nicer).
