Hey guys, my application was on the later end with secondaries completed late september through mid october. I have only received 1 II so far at Hofstra with 7 rejections.

Even though its too early to determine how successful this cycle will be, I'd like to pinpoint the fault of my application and find out why I am not faring better. I have 7 rejections from, Mayo (pre-LOR), Vandy (Pre-sec), Rochester, Dartmouth, Pitt, Cornell, and BU (super later here though). I also never got a secondary from UCLA and am in state with a 3.74/34
(13-9-12).

I understand these rejections are pretty good schools so far, but no LOR request from Mayo and no secondary from UCLA (I know i didn't pass the auto screen nbecause of my 9 in verbal, but they rereview applicants that don't pass the screen) makes me feel that this is a fault in my application.

People have told me that my mdapplicant file looks solid, and so I am pinpointing my faults to either the phrasing of my application (PS and EC summaries) or LOR.

My LOR were from a G.E. Marine Bio course at community (for Science LOR), my P.I. (for Science LOR), and an arts and letters teacher (for Non-science). None of them knew me particularly well. They knew my name and my participation in class, but I didn't go to office hours (though the classes were 20-30 students). My P.I. wrote me a 4 page LOR but i didn't do much in his lab, I did send him a summary of all my EC's so he probably incorporated my entire being into his LOR. But like I said, I didn't do much.

I was hoping someone that faired well this cycle, or a med student can glance at my PS/summary of my EC section and tell me if it is terrible or not. If that turns out to be okay (so long as it isn't terrible), I will know that my LOR are keeping me down. I would really appreciate it :]

your app was late and that's almost certainly what's holding you back. you may also have applied to too many reaches though the fact that you applied to hofstra makes me think you probably had a good mix.

i'll take a quick look at your app if you want me to but also send me or post your school list. at the end of the day though i'm almost certain the answer will be that your app was just way too late.

I see, but it seems many people with similar stats to me have a few interviews. 2/3 of my secondaries were done late september/ early october. I thought a compeltion date around that time isn't good, and may be disadvantageous, but not terribly so.

I definitely applied to a lot of reaches, but I applied to 35 schools so, I think I still have/had a fair number of mid tier/low tiers. Thanks for helping, I'll send the pdf of my application over =)

Your app was definitely too late. The wisdom around here is that you should have submitted your primary in June/July. With that timetable, you would've been complete in August/September (at the latest). You definitely have good stats, but that late in the game you're just another face in a sea of applicants.

Yea and those apps were likely a lot earlier than yours.

Sometimes the process is just totaly random and unfair. I can take a look see if you'd like, though I can't promise I will be able to tell you anything substantive.

That is of course an open offer to anyone else as well, time permitting of course.

PM me your app if you want my opinion on it...

Trust me, I'm a [future] adcom member. 😉

Wait I thought you were pre-med and in a cycle right now?

he/she is, but i think one look at how Blais has fared this cycle allots a certain amount of credibility haha

Quick question, Sending in you're application early means your more likely to get looked at?

Submitting early (June/July) means that you are competing with a smaller pool of applicants for a larger amount of interview slots. Submitting late (past Sept) means that you're now competing with the entire pool of applicants for a constantly diminishing amount of available seats. In general, your application will be looked at, but it seems like it is subject to harsher scrutiny near the end of the cycle because schools want to make their last slots count.

I'd like to advise you to be careful with sending your application around...

Also, what makes you think that your LORs are weak? If they really are, then you might need to try again with letters from people who can really vouch for you.

Your list is a little top-heavy in my opinion.

The only other (teensy, tiny) red flag might be your 9 in VR. Many of the schools you applied to are probably going to want to see at least a 10 in each, although I personally don't think that your 9 alone would knock you out.

Good luck on your Hofstra interview (if you haven't gone yet). Remember that at the end of the day, you just have to get in somewhere!

Legit question.

Legit answer. (Thanks, btw.)

...

A very important point, indeed.

Don't send anything to anyone you don't trust (whether that be due to lack of history on the board, questionable reputation, etc).

All that said, I believe you can trust me. I was actually planning to offer pre-meds this exact service -- review PS, activity descriptions, etc -- after the new year as they prepare for the next cycle. ("Pro bono", of course... Simply looking to give back to the community.)

You only recently updated your mdapps, right? I swear I've looked at it before and I'm sure I would've remembered it because it's so impressive.

Congrats!

Yeah, I updated it recently. Although results have been coming in gradually -- so never make any huge updates/changes.

I think you didn't remember it because, well, I'm not exactly what one would call "William Hwang material". 😉

Pretty sure I would remember 7 acceptances. 😉

Damn Blais, I remember clicking your MDapps and saw joke stats at the top but I never scrolled down. Sorry for doubting your abilities.
