It's nice that you have motivated corpsmen. We had many wasting their opportunity. We freed up a corpsman a semester to work nights so they could have a chance to take a semester of day classes if they wanted. Zero interest, not one took it. Many left with no plans and no goals other than getting out and getting high.

Can we all agree that the corpsmen/medics are a big perk of the job? I will be a mentor to many of these guys for life.

That was definitely more the case as a GMO than as a staff doc. It's just a different relationship when you're an attending.

In case my previous posts weren't clear, I would not do it again. I don't have any regrets and I'm happy with where I ended up post-Navy. But were to decide to today, no way Jose.

I always see posts like this and wonder when did these posters get the chance to complete these kinds of things? In a GMO tour I would have to think. Surely not following residency training as at that point you would be posted mostly at a MTF actually practicing? Correct me if I am wrong.

One of my co-residents made friends with the SMO on one of the ships and he invited her during residency. He offered to supervise her during the "rotation." He was not all that comfortable with our specialty and was happy to have the extra help since we were PGY-3s at the time. The following year he extended the offer to us again (me and another PGY-4) and me and another co-resident went. We saw patients in the am--basically anyone who there was a question about or was in que for a referral or a patient in our clinic--and then enjoyed NYC in the afternoon. The SMO also used this time to teach us about life on a ship and allow us to see how it operated. I got a lot out of the experience. Our being able to do this was pure luck, but still cool.
